Flameworthy

LSS, my dad had to put his dog down this weekend.  I just found out--my brother saw it on stepbrother's FB and emailed my dad, my dad replied to him and copied me.  It's sad.  I'm not saying it's not.  I've been there.

But he's all "If I could have given two years of my life to give him two more years, I would have done it in an instant."  And he has never shown that much interest in either my brother or me, ever.  When I call him, he asks how our weather is and if my car is still getting good mileage, and that's about the extent of his emotional involvement.  Which fine, whatever, it is what it is, but it gets under my skin to see him showing about a thousand times more feeling for the effing dog than he ever has for his own offspring.

So I'm jealous of a dead dog.  There it is.  Not my finest moment, for sure.

I'm sorry your dad sucks - it's not flameworthy to wish that he showed as much interest in his child as his dog.
  • I don't think this is flameworthy.  Your dad sucks at dad-ing humans.  When you're his kid, that blows to find out he's more invested in his relationship with his dog than his kid(s).

The only one that deserves flaming is your dad.  I'm sorry.
  • I'm sorry. Your dad is a jerk to you.
  • My mother was the same.
Some people are simply not able to empathize or to show their feelings.  My mother had narcissistic personality disorder (NPD).  It is likely your father has a similar issue.
I am afraid that you have a lot of company.  Don't let it define who you are.

  • Thanks everyone.  I vented to DH last night and he was really awesome about it.  Then I poured a glass of wine and texted my brother, and he and I were i2i on the whole thing.  So that all made me feel a little better.

It mostly bothered me because after 40 years, I had made my peace with him not being at all emotional or demonstrative.  I figured it just wasn't in him, like color blindness or something.  Then I see this outpouring of emotion for a dog, and it's like "Oh, so he can express feelings.  He was just saving them for the dog.  Cool."
