Acne Help!

So I recently went of BCP and have discovered the natural state of my skin is much more oily than I am used to it being- not an uncommon consequence of quitting the pill, from what I understand.

I'm mostly handling it okay so far BUT one thing is driving me crazy- I'm getting tons of zits, both big and small, all along and in my hairline and especially around my temples. I don't even know what to do to prevent the ones that are actually IN my hair. Anyone found any good solutions for this particular kind of acne, beyond all the common sense stuff (always take off make-up, wash but don't over wash, use clean towels and pillow cases etc.)???

Re: Acne Help!

  • Start with a cleaner containing 2% salicylic acid and use it every day. I have used many brands over the years and they all work pretty well - Neutrogena, LaRoche Posay, etc. That's a gentle way to start - do it for 3-4 weeks and if it's still bad then there are other things you can add/try but they can be harsher on the skin. Personally, the salicylic acid is all my skin needs, but it gets REALLY TERRIBLE without it.
  • I feel like I always fight similar acne in the same zone this time of year thanks to the constant high heat plus high humidity. The only thing that helps outside of leaving the area for a drier and cooler climate is either very lightly moisturizing and or not moisturizing at all around my temples and hairline and being extra extra good with all the basics - face washing, clean bedding, etc. I do my best not to touch or pick at it either (which is SO hard cause I'm a picker).

  • Tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner and a clean pillowcase every night help me.
  • Drinking lots of water and clean towels/pillowcases always help. If it's not helping, I would recommend seeing a dermatologist who can help out. I went off the pill a few years ago and my skin totally freaked out on me.

  • The same thing happened to me when I went off the NuvaRing a few years back.  I ended up getting on EpiDuo, which has worked so far.

  • Being in your hairline, temples and scalp makes me think your conditioner is clogging your pores.  I would switch conditioners to something that will completely rinse out.
  • If you are willing to spend a little money, invest in a Clarisonic (about $100). That will do wonders for your skin! Trust me on this!

I also recently picked up Biore's Pore Penetrating Charcoal Bar (about $6) and I am in love!

I have always struggled with acne and had a horrible bout with cystic acne when I was about 22. I understand how frustrating it can be to have your skin flare up all of a sudden!

  • Also - don't forget about moisturizer! I have oily skin this time of year too. I know it sounds weird, but your skin could be freaking out because it's not being properly hydrated.

I use Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel (the gel is specifically designed for oily skin). It is awesome.

And ditto what PPs said about drinking water (lots of it!), clean pillowcases, and seeing a dermatologist if nothing improves in a couple of weeks.

  • I had acne for over a decade and ran the gauntlet of dermatologists and medications.

Finally last year I tried cutting refined sugar out of my diet, using a gentle non-drying cleanser and a good moisturizer every day, and putting tea tree oil on my face right after I wash it (before the moisturizer). Worked like a charm. I haven't had acne problems since then, and it worked far better than any of the medicated cleansers, ointments, gels, creams, pills etc I'd tried over the years.

Sometimes in the summer I still break out a little at my temples but it goes away pretty fast if I just stick to my routine. I know everyone's skin is different and everyone reactions to diets different (cutting out refined sugar) but I just wanted to share what helped me!

  • Thanks for the advice ladies! For those of you who reported also experiencing skin freak-outs upon going off BC (but who didn't end up going back on as at least one PP mentioned she did)- how long did it take before it calmed down?

I honestly can't tell if this is a "freak out" where my skin is just recalibrating after coming off the pill for seven years, or "the new normal" i.e. my skin would have been like this all along if it hadn't been for the pill interfering. That's why I'm wondering, if it's the former how long will it be before I see another noticeable adjustment!

I'm tellin' ya, I am loving absolutely everything else about being off hormonal birth control (better sex drive, lost weight, general feeling like I understand my body better) but I miss my clear skin!
