Kitchen Gadgets

I need your help. I will be driving to my shower this afternoon and I've got a packed day before I leave! I need to pick up a gift for my MOH who is hosting because I'm driving all night and then working all day tomorrow and it's on Saturday. She LOVES to cook, and is always doing fancy new dishes so I would like to pick up something fun for the kitchen for her. There is a great higher end kitchen store on my way out of town today but I wanted to pick your brains for any fun ideas that may be a little different from your normal kitchen utensils.

She bakes, cooks, grills, lady of many talents. They also just bought a house so she is finally in a normal size kitchen instead of her apartment one so there is space for additional items.

  • I love my spiralizer. The little cheap ones aren't worth having but the nicer ones are amazing. I have this one but I got it cheaper on Amazon.

If you're aiming for smaller gifts, I have found that I can never have enough silicon spatulas or silicon-tipped tongs. I use both constantly.

A great garlic press is wonderful too, as are fun new baking pans. I've been eyeballing a madeleine pan for months, though I can't seem to pull the trigger. Fun muffin tins, cake pans, etc. are always fun.

  • I don't have this, but I want it: http://www.eggshellskitchencompany.com/products/gefu-spiral-vegetable-slicer

My coworker has one, and she makes zucchini "pasta" with it. She says it's awesome.

  • Oh this is one of my favorite topics! Do you have a good idea of what she already has? That's always the risk in buying kitchen stuff for an avid cook... People know I love to cook and I often receive gifts of things that I already own.

For baking: I agree with beachyone that the silicon pans are nice. How about a cake decorating kit? A baking stone for pizza and bread?

Other gadgets that I love and aren't "standard": mandoline, zester, julienne peeler.

Also the following make nice hostess gifts for cooks: salt & peppermill set, tea towels, serving bowl or platter
  • Honestly, I REALLY loved upgrading some of my bakeware. I got a bunch of the Goldtouch stuff from William Sonoma and LOVE it.

If she has a Kitchenaid then any and all of the attachments are pretty awesome. I have a friend who uses the ice cream maker all the time and I use the grater/chopper attachment weekly.

    A variety of cookie cutters.

Definitely agree on a garlic press. Or maybe a home herb kit if she doesn't have her own herb garden yet? I have thyme, rosemary, and sage as perennials in my garden and I plant basil, dill, and cilantro every year.

She does have a mandoline, spiralizer, kitchen aide mixer, and got new pots and pans when she got married a year ago. Serving bowl or platter might be good, she didn't have a lot of the "extra" hosting type things because she always lived in apartments and they recently bought a house.

She has a spiralizer so that's out. I'm not sure if she has a garlic press but that might be one to put on my list! She does got in waves where she bakes all of these amazing looking cupcakes so one of those silicon pans might be a good idea? I totally agree also with the fact that you can never have enough silicon spatulas or tongs.

Would this sound good? a cupcake pan, silicon spatula, some fun cupcake liners, and a mixing bowl? I always seem to run out of mixing bowls when I bake, but that might be a "me" problem.
I think that sounds great, and I don't think you can have too many mixing bowls! If she's into cakes and cupcakes, you could throw in some cake decorating supplies too: http://www.williams-sonoma.com/shop/cooks-tools/baking-pastry-tools/cook-decorating-tools/

My mom has a HUGE herb garden! Maybe I can procure some from here when I'm there tomorrow, that would be a nice free thing to throw in and she has a garden now so I bet she would love it!

  • Ok, considering she has all upgraded bakeware, then I definitely second whoever said adding in some hostess pieces! You can seriously never have enough. I BARELY had enough to cover a shower I recently had at my house.

    Good pieces to have -

A cake stand with a TALL cover to fit over it.

A tiered tray of any and all shapes.

Pretty serving forks and spoons so she doesn't have to resort to plastic spatulas and stuff for a nice party.

Barware like ice tongs, ice bucket, drink mixing accessories.

    Large platters and serving bowls.

    Drink dispensers or pitchers.

  • I knew I could count on all of you, thanks for the great ideas! I have time to hit pretty much one store so I'll take the ideas and see what I can find that fits best!

  • Come back and tell us what you selected!
  • Just got done with the shower and she did an amazing job planning it! I ended up getting her a mixing bowl that is silicon and has a sturdy base but you can bend the top to pour the contents into things without spilling it everywhere, these awesome silicon reusable cupcake things that you bake the cupcakes in them just on a baking sheet, and a new spatula. She said she hates cleaning her cupcake pan so she was excited to try the new things, and she registered for spatulas and only got one so she was excited to get another one!

You all got me in the right direction and the awesome store by my house just pushed the ideas in a little different direction!

  • The city next to the place we're moving has one of those hole-in-the-wall AMAZING kitchen stores.  I'm going to have to look for a bowl like that.  Sounds awesome!

Do you mind me asking what it's called??  I haven't found a good one in years

It's in Lethbridge, called The Sous Chef.  It's not a chain, but you can browse and order things online.   Red Deer has a good one, too, called SunWorks.

  • Thanks.  Not sure when we'll get that far south though.  :(  Red Deer maybe
