Reception entrance/ wedding party intros?

Hi! I'm getting married this October and have some questions about the reception. For some reason, the past few weddings I've been to, I've completely spaced on the timeline for things. We were planning on eating at 6 and starting to dance at 8.
All the weddings I've been to, the DJ announces the parents, ushers, bridal party as couples, and then the bride and groom, all coming in to something different/ and dancing/being funny. I wanted to do this, but after we eat? So we can go into our first dance then? What are your suggestions?
Also, when do we fit speeches/toasts and cake cutting in there?
Thanks!

Re: Reception entrance/ wedding party intros?

  • We were "announced" by the DJ and walked in, then ate. Right around the end of dinner our best man and maid of honor gave toasts, then we did our dances. After our first dance, mother/son, and father/daughter the DJ invited everyone to the dance floor for a "good luck" dance (another slow song), then he just went into the rest of the music for the night.
  • Oh, cake cutting was a little bit into the reception, around 7:45 maybe? It seemed like we danced a bit, then the DJ announced the cake cutting.
  • Our parents, wedding party and H and I were announced into our reception once cocktail hour/picture time for us and wedding party was over with.  Once announced we immediately went into our first dance followed by the parent dances.  Then we all sat down to eat.  H and I got up to do table visits once we finished eating (about 30 minutes into dinner) and it took us about an hour to get around to everyone.  Then the "party" started.  At some point H and I went over to cut our cake but we really didn't plan anything or even announce it to the crowd because I just don't see the point in making everyone look at you while you cut a cake.

But if you do want the whole cake cutting moment I would do it right at the end of dinner.

So this is kind of how it went...

    4:30-4:45  Ceremony
4:45-6  Cocktail hour/pictures for wedding party
    6-6:05  Intros
6:05-6:20  Spotlight dances (about 15 minutes total)
6:20-about 8  Dinner (we didn't have any toasts but this is when they should happen prior to you and your SO getting up to do table visits)
8-10ish  Dance party (cake cutting happened at some point in here)
