Mini party food

So I'm in charge of the food for my MOH's 50 person baby shower next weekend.  The baby is already here as he was adopted so it's more of a "come meet the baby" party, and we have requested it be a "book theme" for gifts... ie no clothes or anything like that.  Her sister is handling decor and dessert.

Anyway for food I was thinking of doing lots of mini things.  It's from 2-5pm on a Sunday, so not during a meal time.  The party is at one of her relative's houses that I've never been to, so I don't know the whole cooking set up there, so I'm trying to do as much prep as I can at home on Saturday and on Sunday morning.

So, do any of you folks have good ideas for bite-size appetizers that can be easily prepped ahead?  I've got a few ideas from Pinterest but would love to hear some other tried and true ones.  I have thrown large parties before but they weren't baby showers... our parties usually revolve around a sporting event.

  • I'm a big fan of stuffed mushrooms. You can make them and cook them the day before, refrigerate overnight, and then serve at room temp.

  • meatballs or cocktail weenies in a crockpot. You can find lots of variations for those on Pinterest. This way you have can a hot app without having to use the oven.
  • Caprese skewers - put a cherry tomato and mozz ball on a toothpick (can sandwich basil in between), after they are on the platter you can drizzle with a balsamic glaze.

Veggie pizza - bake a sheet of crescent rolls, mix mayo, cream cheese, and dry ranch seasoning and spread on, top with chopped veggies and shredded cheddar cheese. I can give you an exact recipe if wanted.

My circle also loves pickle roll ups. Spread some cream cheese on a slice of ham, put a dill pickle spear on it, roll like a burrito, then slice like a pinwheel.
  • Tiny chicken salad sandwiches are always nice.

@lyndausvi Shared something a little while ago called Mini BLT Bites. She didn't leave an exact recipe really, but I went off of her post and made them for my sister's baby shower recently. They were a HUGE HIT! And BEAUTIFUL too!

"Cut the very bottom of a cherry tomato off so it sits flat. Cut off the top and scoop out the insides. Cook bacon and let it cool down. Then chop it up in to little pieces. In a bowl combine the mayo and bacon. Do not use a food processor to combine as the mayo will break down. Put the mayo/bacon mixture in a pastry or ziplock bag and clip off one of the corners. Pipe the mixture in to the tomato. Top with some sort of green."

I used one of those strawberry gutter tool things to gut the tomatoes and it worked perfectly! One package of bacon made about....15 or 20 of those BLT bites and then I used parsley for the green garnish. This is them surrounded by a bunch of caprese skewers.

ETA: I forgot to slice a little off the bottom of the tomatoes. So that's why they are all sitting a little wonky. That instruction is VERY important, but I was rushed for time.

  • Dips! Bacon Spinach Dip in a breadbowl. Have ripped up bagels or bread to dip it in

  • A big hit in my family is Italian baguettes sliced thin, spread on some herb or chive cream cheese, pile on some roast beef and top with a roasted red pepper. Also works on cucumbers with ham and cherry tomatoes.

    Glad they were a hit!

Sorry for my lack of a recipe.  That is how DH told me to do it.   I guess we just kind of wing it.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • @lyndausvi I think I was only worried about how much mayo to use. I winged it too, and it's definitely an easy "wing it" type of recipe. :) Although I wish I had made more bacon, I had lots of unfilled tomatoes (that I nommed up later because I love tomatoes).

  • Thanks everyone!  I already had caprese skewers on the list!  I just spent my lunch break at Costco to price out a bunch of things to use for some of these ideas.  My wedding is 2 weeks after this party so my funds are super tight.

  • Something else that would be relatively inexpensive is pudding/dessert shooters. We had those at my shower and they were SO good.

  • My go to is savory Palmiers. Quick, cheap, easy. Store bought puff pastry, unrolled and spread with whatever you want: I like pesto and shredded cheese, but have also done mushroom duxelle, pate, boursin, brie and jam, the possibilities are endless! Roll it back into a tube (or the fancy heart below), slice it into 1" slices and bake!

If you look on foodgawker (which is just the best site in general) there are a million Palmier recipes.

You can also do sweet, I have done nutella and jam. amazing. Good Luck! image

OH yes I always forget about these.  I usually make Ina Gartens version with pesto, sundried tomatoes, cheese, and toasted pine nuts.
