Acronyms

Being somewhat new to the boards, I don't know what a lot of the acronyms mean. Yesterday, 'AW' had me thrown off for awhile until someone else asked what it meant. I'm just wondering if I'm the only one who plays the "what can it be game?"

AW: Amazing Whiner, Awesome Wingman, Alternative Wedding. Who knew it meant "Attention Whore?" Although, that made so much more sense as I continued reading posts.

I'll also admit "MUD" had me for thrown for the longest. I think there's a place that lists the meanings, but 1. I'm too lazy to look for it and 2. sometimes I crack myself up with my "translations."

Am I the only one who does this?

When I was new here, I'd google the acronyms or wait for someone to ask. I was familiar with a lot of them because I was part of a community for military SOs back in the day but TK has some unique just to these boards.

I was in the military myself so I'm used to acronyms in general. But some of the ones on here make me giggle. PPD? Love it.

QFT means Quoted for Truth, but for awhile I thought it was "Quite Fucking True!"

We had this discussion recently. I confessed then that I thought FTW was fuck the what; I still read it that way sometimes. FTR (for the record), FTW is "for the win."

For some reason I kept putting "AssWhole" as AW... I don't even know why since I'm completely aware that's not the correct spelling.

GBCK confused me for awhile. I understood the idea but not the acronym. It stands for "good bye cruel knot".

GBCK was the one I had the hardest time with until I finally asked. I tried googling it first and got "Green Building Council Korea"

But here it means "Goodbye Cruel Knot" for when a snowflake gets really huffy and dramatically announces that she/he is leaving the knot forever.

I have a straight married male friend who thought LOL was "Lots of love". For a good 6+months he thought his male admin might have the hots for him because he would text LOL to him.

One day a group of us were talking about texting acronyms and LOL came up. That is when he found out LOL was really "laughing out loud". He had a good laugh over it.

I puzzled over PPD for the longest time before asking. TK has a list of acronyms but it's pretty useless because it doesn't have any of the ones people ask about!

The only ones I've seen people ask about are MUD, PPD, AW and maybe a couple others. I have never seen someone ask for a clarification on MOH, MIL, HM, or any of the other ones TK has on their list. Now, maybe it's because the person found the list before hand, but I doubt it.

The one that threw me was GTKY - Getting to Know You, since everyone in those threads used to just talk about how drunk they were. They usually happened Fri/Sat nights back in the day.

I knew STD from awhile back, since I'm not new to message boards, and a bunch of my friends were using that term for their wedding years ago. But my sister and FSIL were both like "STD???" My FSIL works in a gyn office so she said her mind immediately went to sexually transmitted diseases. My sister, still cannot use STD she uses StheD. haha

Maybe I'm perverted but StheD looks short for Suck the Dick to me.

When I started, I thought AW was "attention wanted" so that's kind of close. I agree with the STD- that one should be written out.

People used to post their engagement/ wedding pics and say PIP. I thought this was just a fun way of saying "yay!" like my pics are in- pip pip horray! (I realize it's Hip) But it actually stands for "picture in post". hahahah

Some get tricky in Wedding Party because you don't know if they are talking about BM- bridesmaid or best man.
