What to wear to a "reception" following a private DW?

Hello,
I will be getting married in a private ceremony in Cancun. It will only be myself and FH in Cancun. When we get back we are hosting a reception/marriage celebration/party/whatever you want to call it. The event will be held at a country club, so guests will be dressed semi formal. I'm wondering what I should wear. It doesn't make sense to me to wear a wedding dress, because it's not my wedding day. I'm wondering if I should stick with a white dress? Go for another color? What would you do?

  • It may not be your wedding day but it is your reception.  What would you do if you were having it all together?  Wear the same dress or change?  What does your dress for the ceremony in Cancun look like?
  • I would not wear a wedding dress. You could wear a white dress appropriate for the season, but really, you don't have to stick with white if you don't want to.

I would wear a nice dress for the party, because you are right, it is not your wedding.
ETA the type of dress depends on your personal style preferences.

  • No wedding dress.  Wear what you would wear to a nice country club event.  It's a great excuse to buy a new dress!

No, it is not a reception. A wedding reception is held immediately following the ceremony, for the express purpose of thanking one's wedding guests for attending.

This is a celebration/party. Wear a fab dress, but pick a color you feel great in. Do not wear your wedding dress.

  • I would use this party as an excuse to buy an amazing cocktail or floor length glitzy gown that I have always wanted to wear but never had a reason to.  Pick whatever color you feel best in.

I dunno, I think it depends on what your wedding dress looks like.  My BFF got married in Belize and had a local reception after they returned from their honeymoon.  Nobody would mistake the reception for a wedding reception, but she still wore her wedding dress.  Now, her wedding dress was a halter neck and knee length style in silk shantung so it wasn't a typical wedding dress other than the fact it was white, and she didn't wear a veil or anything like that.  I certainly didn't side-eye it at all.

  • What are you wearing for your wedding day? Depending on what you are wearing, there is no reason you can't wear it again for the party back at home. If it's something you don't feel would fit the venue, then feel free to get a fun white cocktail dress or evening dress. You are still a newlywed and no reason you can't stand out as the new bride being celebrated. But if you find a great dress in a different color that you love, then go for that. Wear what you feel you will be comfortable in.
