Chalkpainted glass mugs

Does anyone have any experience with chalk painting clear glass mugs? We just got done painting around 300 of them with standard "brush" chalk paint. Turns out, when the liquid condensates on the class it starts to peel the paint away. Real cool, right?! NOT!

But I was wondering if anyone has experience with spray paint on glass? This would be another option for us...Because it's so "easy" to peel off we might just soak them, peel it off, and repaint--with spray paint---300 mugs. Ugh!
Any suggestions are much appreciated :) Thanks.

This is the general "look" we are going for:

  • That totally stinks! I have no words of advice.... but I think if you can figure out a way to make this work it will be very cool, your inspiration picture is awesome!

  • I bet they're the labels you can buy and just stick them on there! Etsy has a ton of them!
  • I am wondering if you need some sort of primer that works on glass prior to the chalkboard paint. I saw somehting on Pinterest about this so I will look for it.
  • I haven't painted glass in a long time, but I think I used a primer first.

Also, did you let them set long enough before testing it out?

  • This is all great advice. I think we will definitely need to peel the old paint off and think of something new :( Ugh. So much work. But I think it will be worth it.

Kelsey, would I just search for "chalkboard labels" on etsy?

  • Do you need to "fire" it. I know with glass paint sometimes you need to put it in the oven and let it heat up.

yes, about a week....I think the primer idea is good!

We should have painted 2 or 3 and tested them. Instead we got the idea and ran with it. Not one of my best moments :(

  • Here's what I was thinking about but I am not sure it addresses your concern. At most you might be able to post a question to this blogger.

  • Off-topic: I never knew they also made magnetic paint.  I kind of want to go make my own magnetic chalkboard..just because I could..
