I am sick. Any good quick remedies?

Most of my office had colds this week but I was hoping that since I sit a bit further away from everyone I wouldn't get it.  Well, I got it, and my wedding's in 8 days.  Have a sore throat and am stuffy.  I've taken some sudafed and just drank some EmergenC and have been drinking vitamin water for the last few days.  Thankfully FI was out of town all this week, came home last night, and then left again this morning.  He's immuno-compromised so any sickness for him is way worse.

Anybody have any other remedies to help a cold pass quickly?

  • Thanks ladies, thankfully, I am well supplied in both honey and whisky at home.

  • I'm adding that obviously booze and honey won't cure you, but you'll feel better.  I also drink a lot of OJ (I'm not big on Emergen-C) as it has the vitamin C and I'm convinced that I "pee out" my sickness (the acid in oranges makes me pee).

Also, try to sleep as much as you can in the coming days.  Feel better soon!

P.S.  This is one thing I'm worried about- getting sick right before.  I had walking pneumonia earlier this year and even just a few weeks ago I got a really sore throat for like 8 days- ugh!

Yeah stuff like OJ upsets my stomach if I have more than a small glass... that's why I do the Vitamin water (and lots of regular water too).  I too am convinced you can pee it out!

Thankfully it's the long weekend and I have the house to myself.  My mom arrives Sunday afternoon so I'm hoping I start feeling better by then.  I was supposed to go up to MOH's house tomorrow to see her dress and work on a few things but not the end of the world if I can't, I can do it by myself.

  • Drink lots of tea (esp. green tea with honey), get some rest, and take a zinc supplement.

  • Oil of oregano! I'm a big fan of natural medicine (and of course modern medicine when needed!) and I swear by this stuff. You can find it at most health food stores, Whole Foods, etc. Just a few drops in hot water and you will be good to go! Works perfectly for what you are describing.

The taste is ... interesting, but it's worth it.

Yes- I'm with you!  I use OofO a lot- can't believe I forgot about it!  And Thieves to hopefully keep the germs away.  I was out earlier this year when I got the WP.

    Mucinex and the neti pot.

Sure it's gross, but it works.

  • Hot water with lemon and honey crush 2 aspirins add in liquid stir and drink.  This helps with sore throat, headache, and fever.
  • Hot toddy.

    Second that

  • Echinacea is the best for colds, imo. It boosts your immune system and has always made my colds shorter.

  • I second the netti pot.  Stay dehydrated, rest as much as possible and overdose on vitamin C.  My coworkers tease me about this because your body can only absorb so much but I swear by it!

  • So sorry you are feeling bad @julieanne912!! I agree with PP's, use a neti pot or saline spray!! It is gross but it works really well.

Also, try hot lemon water with local honey in it. Honey has a natural microbial in it that helps flush out any sickness and is very soothing. If it is local honey, it can help prevent illnesses that are related to local allergies. I hope you feel better!

  • Thanks for all these ideas ladies!  Back at work today for today and tomorrow.  Feeling better, although now I'm in the annoying coughing/drainage stage of the cold.  I'm hoping by Thursday I'll be feeling 100%.

  • You can clear all that gunk with a netti pot, rather than allow it to drain down your throat.
