Talking about my brother's recent move reminded me that I need to get a housewarming gift going. I wanted to let the dust settle a bit and wait until they got back from vacation, and now it's time. I can't decide whether to send a practical gift (Lowe's/Target/BB&B gift card), or a fancy-food gift. My brother does love fancy food, but every time I talk to him it's "We have to go to Lowe's for ______," or "We just got back from Target because we needed new _______." I can't decide.

Send fancy food. It's fun and delicious.

I hate both of these options. (Add suggestions below.)

  • I voted food, but if you think money is tight go for useful.  Then again someplace like target or bed bath and beyond means they could potentially buy something the see everyday and think of you.
  • In general I'm not a fan of gift cards (cash never expires or loses value)...  And the food basket doesn't seem quite the right fit for this one...  A beer/wine one maybe if he partakes in the consumption of adult beverages after a hard days work...

I'm guessing that in passing they've said something that they'd like to do/get but don't have the money right now, go for that...

  • When we moved into our new house, our neighbors brought us over a basket with a bottle of wine, a fancy beer, a succulent, and a dog toy. It was the most thoughtful perfect gift and I loved it! Yeah a Lowes GC would have been more helpful, but after a long day of painting that beer and wine were SO much better. And my dog had so much fun with her toy that it is no longer with us, may it rest in peace. Along with the succulents that I killed. Womp womp.

Eh, I don't think money is particularly tight--you raise good points, and between you @futurecptkirk, I think you've talked me into fancy food.  Now I just have to pick something, which is the fun part.  :)
  • I'm a little late on this one but I can say that personally I budget for needing extra things when moving and it's stuff that I need so I will spend the money on it and not go out to dinner if it comes down to that. So as a recipient I would be super excited to get a fancy food basket because it's probably something I've decided to forgo with the hardware store bills racking up this week. Since you say that money isn't particularly tight this is probably the perfect time to do fancy food.
