so me and hubby are going to an outdoor wedding next weekend out of state its in a botanical like garden the grounds have all kinds of flowers and plants and such.

anyways i have my outfit  its a black v neck dress with a skirt attached i have a black bolero and i am going to wear black sling backs

my hubby has really nice black khakis and black dressy pants if he wore that with a nice polo shirt would he be underdressed. hes not a suit and tie guy he owns a suit jacket but its somewhere in storage at his moms house and who knows if it still fits.

Re: appropriate attire for a evening outdoor wedding

  • For an evening wedding, even at a garden, I think a polo shirt is too casual. I would at least go with a shirt, tie and sports coat if not the suit. What were the invitations like? Did they indicate the formality of the wedding (I don't mean giving a dress code).

I agree - the least casual my DH would be to a wedding would be slacks, button down and sport coat.

ETA - I would add a pop of color into your outfit too - maybe skip the black bolero and add a colored bolero or cardigan.
  • Your outfit sounds like you're going to a funeral. Perhaps it looks more festive in person but all black for a garden wedding?

For him, slacks, button down shirt, tie, blazer. Minimum, and my man would be in a suit.

Unless the invitation was aggressively casual, a polo shirt is unacceptable and inappropriate. And "really nice" is not a modifier that goes with "black khakis."
  • There are going to be outdoor games and such at the wedding so the formality is more on the causal side but more dresses but not suit and tie. I am dressing up my dress with silver jewelry so I won't totally be back
  • I still say a polo shirt is an absolute no. Button down short minimum. And silver isn't really adding any color at all.
  • I think your outfit sounds OK, but I agree that a pop of color would go a long way. Whether. You do it withcolorful jewelry (silver doesn't really count, I'm talking like yellow or teal) or shoes or a scarf...it'd go a long way.

I really don't think a polo is dressy enough for a wedding. Even one with lawn games. Pants sound fine but he should wear a button down. If it really is a casual wedding, I think he can choose a tie or a jacket - don't really need both. I'd vote jacket since y'all will be there at night.

  • I agree the all black in a garden seems a little out of place, and I think he should wear a button down shirt.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • my wedding was very similar to the one you're describing, I think we had 1 guy in a polo and one woman in a polo and one in a dressy tshirt (not sure how else to describe it). The women were definitely more underdressed than the rest, but I didn't notice the guy had a polo until I just looked at pictures.

If you're H can do a dress shirt instead of polo that might fit better (and if it will be cool in the evening that might be better anyway). I have no problem with the all black for your dress, though if you're afraid it wont work for garden maybe add color either with shoes or jewelry

  • My H wore a polo shirt with khakis once for a wedding, but that is because the wedding was very casual and outdoors in a horse pen.  I wore a maxi dress with sandals.  All guests were dressed pretty much the same.  In fact the wedding party were the ones that looked out of place in their formal dresses and tuxes.

But for this wedding I would have your guy wear a button down and tie with dress pants.  Then during the reception he can take off the tie and unbutton the top button if he wants to be a bit more casual.

I do think you need to add a pop of color to your outfit since this is a garden wedding.  Now if were in a ballroom I would say all black and silver is good, but I think you need to brighten it up more for an outdoor garden wedding.

The bolded parts just don't jive. I'd be so pissed if I had to buy a formal dress or DH had to rent a tuxedo for a wedding in a horse pen. What the actual....

Yeah it was odd.  It was also about 98 degrees with high humidity so it was ridiculously hot.  The groom ended up sweating through his tan tux pants and jacket so it looked like he had peed himself.  And the bride was in a very pretty gown but it had a satin bodice and a full ruffled skirt.  Just seemed really out of place for the location.

  • @Maggie0829 - I'm sure they were envisioning equestrian chic (remember that thread in Reception Ideas? lol!).... That's what they get for placing vision above functionality!

Ok I also have these shoes https://m.payless.com/womens/premium-comfort-shoes/70962.html?dwvar_70962_color=bronze but in taupe color the lining of my dress is tan and you can see it through the skirt part would it go or stick with the black
  • This is my dress for reference

I think your dress is very pretty - I have two made by the same company (I think) and they are fun to dance in. I think it is a little too dressy to wear to a garden wedding that will have games though. I see it more for a wedding with dinner and dancing. As far as shoes, I would stick with sandals but if you are doing pumps go with the lighter color ones.
