NWR: Some people - shaking my head

So a friend of mine just posted that Facebook legal privacy notice on her page. You know, the fake one that's been circulating for THREE YEARS and I literally thought everyone knew by now was fake.

Why wouldn't you google stuff like this before making yourself look like an idiot?

Some people. And this is a girl I thought was smart. She posted the Ebola oranges hoax a while back, but I couldn't tell from the comment along with the shared post whether she believed it or not.

Re: NWR: Some people - shaking my head

  • Weird, that notice was the first thing on my feed just now too!

    Oh dear.

Hopefully, we just have a mutual friend who is not too smart and that hoax is NOT making a comeback.
  • Wow, is your friend older?  Cause that's usually the only people I see posting stuff like that... like my mom, her friends, H's really annoying aunt (who also loves Donald Trump) etc.

  • This has been all over my Facebook today too.. *eye roll*
  • edited September 2015
    Saw it here too....

(edited to delete great GIF that isn't working)

No, she's mid-20s. And the funny thing is, I see younger people posting this stuff. This woman and also a woman in her early 30's. But then, most of my older friends only go on Facebook once a month or so.

Nope, I've now seen it twice today!

It's making a comeback.  I think I had 10 or so people on my feed post it.

Oh great. I posted the Snopes link on that woman's page earlier. I can see I'll probably get a lot of mileage out of it.

    BAHAHAHAHAHA

I love how people think that posting some legal-sounding statement on their Facebook somehow negates the legal agreement they consented to when they first opened their account.  Facebook owns us, let's face it.

So yeah, my mom posted it this evening.

  • It's annoying but amusing as well. My 50-something aunt posted it yesterday afternoon... and my 60-something aunt promptly got upset and concerned, wanting to post it but not knowing how to copy & paste on her phone. Cue several comments where the younger aunt is trying to tell older aunt how to do it. Hysterical!

    She made it, though. ;)

  • According to some of my Facebook friends, Facebook will be charging $5.99 to keep your info private BUT if you post that status, then you don't have to pay $5.99. Some people, indeed.

  • a friend of mine called or texted me a few years ago because she got an email from a mutual friend saying she was traveling in Europe and lost all of her money and needed some sent.  My friend (very smart person) thought it was real!  She's like omg M is in trouble and stranded.  I was like uhhhh a) pretty sure she's not in Europe and b) there's like 20 other people she would contact before either of us (we're friends but haven't been close since college)

I'd heard about that scam years before but apparently my friend hadn't

  • I've seen this multiple times too. Come on people.

  • "Facebook will begin stealing your underwear at midnight tonight if you don't copy & paste this message within the next 37 seconds, forward it to everyone in your mailing list, print a hard copy for your grandmother & call your congressman. This is real guys. I got the message first hand from Elvis who was having lunch with Bigfoot, while riding the Loch Ness monster. It was even on the inside back cover of every tabloid in the grocery store checkout line.
Not only will Facebook start charging you tomorrow, they are also going to bill your credit card for the past 3 years of services. Luckily, each person who copies & pastes this status will receive a FREE unicorn in the mail on Friday. However, if you don't repost this status, Facebook code has been set up to automatically set your computer on fire & harm an innocent bunny in the forest! It's all true, it was on the news!
    It's official!"

Saw that one today. Definitely giggled.
  • I've seen it all over my Facebook news feed too.  It's so much BS.
  • I also have been seeing it pop-up again today. Then I saw this status from a really funny guy I vaguely know:

"As of September 28th, 2015 at 07:00 p.m. Eastern standard time, I do not give Facebook or any other demonic and supernatural entities associated with Facebook permission to use my pictures, information, or posts, both past and future, or even X-Men: Days of Future Past. By this statement, I give notice to Facebook it is strictly forbidden to disclose, copy, cut, paste, eat, burn, whittle, churn, curse, distribute, or take any other action against me based on this profile and/or its contents. The content of this profile is private and confidential information, especially those really terrible pictures of me from high school. Those are the MOST confidential. The violation of privacy can be punished by law (UCC 1-867-5309 and the Rome Statue. You know, that statue in Rome). NOTE: Facebook is now a public entity. All members must post a note exactly like this. If you prefer, you can copy and paste this version, in case you're not a fake lawyer like I am. If you do not publish a statement at least once in your sorry, pathetic life, it will be tactically allowing the use of your photos (yes, THOSE photos), as well as the information contained in the profile status updates. Everyone will know how many times in 2010 you wanted to pretend that airplanes in the night skies were like shooting stars. DO NOT SHARE. NO ONE ACTUALLY LIKES SHARING. You MUST copy and eat paste."

    This was on my feed:

  • Just another example of how common sense is becoming extinct.

  • A relative just posted this one. (And this is actually an older one - my husband's uncle!)

I'm aware that my privacy ended the very day that I created a profile on Facebook, I know that whatever I post can (and usually does) get shared, tagged, copied, and posted elsewhere because I'm THAT fascinating. If I don't want anyone else to have it, then I don't post it!
DO NOT SHARE. YOU GOTTA COPY AND PASTE
  • My brother posted it, I told him it was a hoax and he said, yeah he was just trying to add to the paranoia.

I think he just didn't want to admit he got suckered in.
