Arrange My Livingroom

I put this in FWP but wanted to start a post on it. I got a new couch yesterday and I'm at a loss of how to arrange my living room now. I'm hoping that some of the clever people on here can help me! The living room is kind of an open space, it is open on one side to the kitchen, the other to the hallway and front door, and there is the other hallway that goes to the laundry room and bedroom. I would love to get rid of the recliner but FI loves it so it has to stay. There is a sofa table that I can move wherever that is along a wall right now and yes, I will be refinishing it soon (it's on the long list of "to do's"). Please excuse the wedding crafting explosion that is all over the floor in the pictures.

Side note: There is a door to the back deck behind the recliner that we can't cover, it's the only way to get out there.

Re: Arrange My Livingroom

  • I would move the sofa parallel to the wall that the TV is on, perpendicular to the window, so that the back of the couch is almost flush with the door, but away from the wall a couple of feet. Put an end table between the couch and the window, and put the recliner on the other side of the couch angled toward the TV with an end table in between.

  • The sofa feels a bit tight to the TV but that might be because I'm not used to having it that way (used to have a sectional). I'm starting to think the sofa table against the wall needs to move?

  • Yeah I think that sofa table does need to move. It looks like it is taking up a lot of space just because it sticks out from the wall. I'm wondering what it would be like if you moved the sofa to the where it was perpendicular with the other wall (the wall nearest the recliner) and put the recliner where the sofa is. Kinda like you had it before, but not angled.

  • Can you show us a photo of what the space on the other side of the door looks like?  Is it a wall?  An open area?

Here's are two pictures from standing in front of the TV and another one from up top with the lamp on the side by the recliner (the dog is under the blanket so I couldn't move it). This living room is so difficult because you have to have walking space around all the furniture since there are hallways to other rooms. The side behind where the couch is now is an open space to the eat in kitchen, on the other side is the hall to the front door, and behind where the recliner is now are the stairs to the basement, the door to the laundry room, and hall to the master bedroom.

  • Yeah, you have an awkward living room... I am having trouble thinking of any other logical arrangement. Maybe leave it as is for a few days and see how it feels when you're used to it? And if you don't get used to it, I suggest getting rid of all furniture and just buying a shitload of bean bag chairs.

Haha.. just go back to college! Yeah, it's a weird living room for sure, thanks for your suggestions though, after I moved the lap and pushed the recliner back in that arrangement I think I'm liking it a bit more now. I'll leave it for a bit and see if it grows on me, otherwise I'm not sure anything will make it any better.

  • I think the arrangement in your last photos will probably look the best, but I'd move that sofa table - it looks a bit out of place.  What about putting it right behind the couch??

With the arrangement how it is I'm not sure it will work behind the couch, then it will block the area to the door that goes to the back deck?

Ahhh, I didn't see that the door was that in line with the couch.  If it were my house, I'd take the tv off the wall and get a low tv stand and put it that same caddy corner.  Then, you have a piece of furniture that is functional and part of the decor.  I'd get rid of the sofa table altogether and I'd probably take the stuff off the wall.   If you had the tv on a low stand centered on the wall, you could put a pretty wreath above it. (With your seating though, that layout would be awkward).  But when the tv is off center, the wall decor is throwing me off.  I might consider a couple of floating shelves instead - one 3 feet, then another one that's 2 feet that's slightly over it.

Curious as to what's in the corner opposite the tv - can't make it out.  If you want to save the sofa table, would it work there?
  • In addition to the PP's idea, my other thought is get rid of the sofa table and the ottoman and get as more functional coffee table.

I do like the last layout best though!

  • Can you move the tv to the nook between the kitchen and hall?  And put the couch against the wall where the sofa table is now?  The room would seem SO MUCH bigger and open if you didn't have to use the couch to create a hallway!

If you need to see the tv from the other rooms, a strategically placed mirror has worked wonders for me.

  • Thanks everyone for taking a look at it! Just to answer some questions.. The corner opposite the TV has an old trunk that holds all of our movies and games (yet another awkward corner). I'm not married to the sofa table and have been thinking of getting rid of it. As for the wall art, three of the pictures were on the floor and I had nails from Christmas decorations so to just get them off the floor I put them on those (that is not where they will live). If I take all of the wall decor down will the wall look ridiculously blank? We have vaulted ceilings so that wall goes up almost 20 feet.

The TV only gets turned on when we are watching a movie, so no issues if we can't see it from another room. The reason it was put there was when we had a sectional we placed all the furniture to feature the picture window for the view to the woods behind out house so we can watch the deer and turkeys :)

I like the floating shelf idea, I actually have a lot of them from our last house that were never put back up! As for getting rid of the ottoman and getting a "functional" coffee table, the ottoman is functional for us, we put our feet on it and have no need for a coffee table. Last time we had one it was mostly used for feet, there was never any other reason for it to be there so we got rid of it.
