Gift Ideas

Ok so my BIL's girlfriend is really nice (I wish he would marry her already).  I've only met her once in person but I've Skyped with them often.  The one time I met her she had a lovely gift (gifts) for me...a box of items for things that certain states in India specialize in (i.e., one state in India specializes in spices, another specializes in fabric) as sort of samples from each state.  It was incredibly thoughtful.  She has also apparently already bought me an Indian dress (see attached picture) for some of the festivities coming up (it gets tailored once I get there), which is beyond sweet.

Any ideas for an equally sweet gift back?  She is a very modern woman, has a career in marketing, her own place, etc.  I don't really know her hobbies.  I'm usually really good at gift giving but I want to do something really thoughtful for her....

First of all - that dress is FREAKING GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I'm done drooling and being jealous over all the pretty Indian things you get to dress up in. ;)

Jewelry is always nice, and I would assume you know something about her style.

You could also "copy" her gift to you and bring a bunch of goodies from the States if you wanted to. I don't know what the rules are around bringing in food, but you could do some delicious Wisconsin cheese, maybe some other fun craft things that are well known for the area. I always loved it when my German relatives sent us sweets from Germany. Basically stuff you KNOW she can't get where she lives.

  • I like @labro's idea about bringing a bunch of goodies from the U.S.
  • I guess I suggested jewelry because I know Indian women usually have a lot so I know she'd probably use it lol! But yeah. silver would be beautiful!

I really like the other idea more, it just sounds like fun! But maybe you could always toss in some silver earrings to complete it.

  • May be a nice sweater/shirt from a store she can't find in India?

    A board game or puzzle?

    an afgan or quilt?

  • @minskat30 - That dress looks amazing!!!

On the gift front, I am always so terrible at this sort of stuff. Tasty stuff always works. Or like peaseblossom mentioned, some kind of game could be nice!

  • I agree that dress is gorgeous!

I like the gifts from the US idea and a game or book.  You could even do Hersheys or Mars chocolates. I know when my colleagues from India come to visit they always want to shop for clothes and electronics.

  • Will do!  I'm getting a little nervous about going though now...dengue fever is a bit rampant in Dehli of late.  A friend who came over this weekend told us his dad nearly died from it recently.  I wish we had decided to go in December (when the mosquitoes die off) instead of November.  Oh well...lots of bug spray for me I guess.
  • Ugh fingers crossed you don't get bit by any mosquitoes while over there. Bug spray is a good idea. Get tea tree and geranium oil too!

  • @minskat30 I'm a bit late, but I wanted to suggest a mosquito repellant... I used a shea butter kind on a recent hiking trip and it worked amazingly, plus it smells good. I'm sure there are other brands but the one I used was Lulu Life. It's thick but feels good on the skin when rubbed in. Makes you great at collecting dirt though.
