Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

How do you find out what needs to be said?

I was looking at this section last night and I kept seeing people advise vow writers to find out what legally needs to be said during the ceremony/ vows. I tried a quick search on Google and haven't found anything. where do I find this information?

Re: How do you find out what needs to be said?

  • If you're marrying in the US, Google the county where you're getting married and then call the county clerk's office.  If you can specifically Google the division in charge of marriages, contact them directly.

If you're marrying outside the US, do the same for the jurisdiction in which you're getting married.

  • ^^ That. Though I think probably the legal wording is likely to be covered by a declaration of intent (i.e. the "I do" or "I will" part) and whatever else the officiant says under local law (the "by the power vested in me" part)

Remember too as you write your vows that they are promises and should be worded as such. If you find you're writing a love letter, give that to your spouse privately!
