Handmade Card Box

FI and I are getting married on Saturday (YAY!), but we did not register for anything. We've been living together for four years, and we have everything we need.
It was suggested to me to get a "card box" for people to place -- you guessed it -- cards. When we saw the pricing, we were a little turned off ($30+ for a flimsy wooden or metal box), so we just made one with a wooden basket we had, nailing the top shut and covering the slats. It's painted to our theme, and we really like it.

So here's the question: Since it's not a "conventional" card box (i.e one purchased from a store or catalog), should we paint "Cards" on the front, as an indicator? FI and I go back and forth as to whether or not our guests will be able to infer that that's where cards go.
The other question is, I guess, is the box necessary? Has anyone ever used one?

Re: Handmade Card Box

  • There's been one at every wedding I've been to - the last few years they've all been birdcages, actually. Most of them have had signs, or there has been some other way to indicate that it's for cards - like it's next to the guestbook or on the gift table.

Since you've got it painted the way you like it (and can therefore possibly keep and reuse it after the wedding), maybe skip the painting and consider a little bunting sign that says cards? I think they sell these in a couple different styles at Michaels for maybe $5 or so. Or for a quick fix, print the word "cards" in a nice font on a piece of cardstock and do a little tent in front of it, like an escort card.

I want to see a pic, honestly! It sounds really cute and I love that you made it yourselves. I couldn't be arsed to come up with a card box. My bridesmaid made me one after I told her I had no interest in it, haha.

  • H and I made our own card box as well - for the exact same reason you did - for what they are, the commercially-made ones are ridiculously priced.

We did not make a sign indicating the box was for cards - it was on a table with our family members' wedding portraits. We figured people would be naturally curious as to what was in the box - and they were! It worked out perfectly.

Although, if you are concerned, I would take @spockforprez's advice and make a tent card out of cardstock with "cards" printed on it.

I too would love to see a pic!!
  • We did put a little sign out that said "Cards" in the end. I didn't have time to take a photo, but the photographer almost certainly did, so I'll post it when I get photos back!
