Cat pee remedy?

My 33 year old son piled his laundry on top of his washing machine and walked away.  His cat peed on it, and he diidn't discover it for several days.
I suggested vinegar and enzyme treatments.  Any other ideas?

Re: Cat pee remedy?

  • I have experienced some pretty severe cat urine misfortunes and I've had the best of luck with vinegar, but you've already mentioned that. He could mix the vinegar with an essential oil for an added kick of fragrance but he may not want that. I'd just stick with the vinegar in all honesty. Any fancy sprays or potions seem like a waste to me.

  • I had a dog pee problem, but I got this stuff called Fizzion on Amazon that worked really well!

  • I think you're right, vinegar will probably be the best solution. Something similar happened to me in the past and I washed with lots of vinegar and then re-washed with my normal detergent and the smell was completely gone.

  • Nature's Miracle.  Best stuff I've found.  It breaks down the enzymes in the cat urine.

I had a sick cat. Didn't realize it right away as outwardly she seemed find and it was just after we had moved to a new place and thought it was behavioral.  She peed all over a couch with some regularity.

I hosed it down, literally soaking the cushions, pillows, everything with Nature's Miracle.  Worked like a charm.  You would never know that it had been pee soaked.  We lived with it for several years after the fact.  Even my H who gets skeeved out if the cats use one of the human plates for food, was ok using and sitting on it.

  • Definitely vinegar, not only does it completely cover tbe smell but the cat will be able to smell it on the clothes even when humans can't and cats hate the smell of vinegar. Also try some oroducts designed to remove the smell of urine mixed in with the clothes.

Is this an older or younger cat? Our kitten started to develop a peeing problem so we reinforced litter box training by pulling the rugs out the bathroom and putting him in there for a week. We put in a small cat tree, a bunch of toys, his food ans water and his litter box. He stayed in there when we were at work and when we went to bed at night. He had no otjer place to pee except his box and deove the point home.

  • @drunkenwitch - you don't want to just cover the smell.  You need to eliminate it.  This is why I suggested the Nature's Miracle.  This is a product that is developed to eliminate the enzymes in cat urine.  If you don't do that, the cat will continue to go back to and smell the urine.

I know, my post was done mid coffee, so tbe wording was awkward. You are right, tne nature's miracle product works really well.

Gotcha.  I used to work in the pet supply industry, I learned all about different things.  I'm not usually one to give into the specialty products, but I was so impressed with NM that I recommend it to everyone who has this kind of a problem.

  • Another vote for Nature's Miracle.  I used to volunteer at an animal shelter and that stuff really is miraculous.
  • Another vote for Nature's Miracle. I've survived the peed on laundry basket with it!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I will say that white vinegar gets the smells out of everything I have used it for so far, and I wash horse blankets that are literally rolled in horse poop, and pee, and not washed for at least a month..

I think the difference is that a horse is not using it's urine to mark its territory (correct me if I'm wrong).  A cat is peeing on clothing, furniture, whathaveyou to say THIS IS MINE and/or I'M NOT HAPPY.  Because of the marking aspect, cat urine, particularly male cat urine has a very different kind of chemistry that makes it designed to linger and stay so that other cats, animals, humans know his spot has been marked.  Breaking down those odor causing enzymes is essential to removing the scent entirely.

  • SO's cat was not a fan when we started dating.  She started peeing on my stuff, and on his floor.  One time she looked him in the eye, squatted and peed while glancing over at me.  It would have been hilarious if it wasn't so infuriating.  Nature's Miracle for Cats is awesome.  They also have different grades depending on how bad the problem is.  They also have Nature's Miracle for dogs, which came in handy when our dog got a UTI and peed uncontrollably around the living room.

Horses pee has a strong ammonia concentration in it as well as cat pee, I have also had barn cats pee on my saddle pads, and horse blankets and had no problem getting the smell out after it has sat a few days before a wash. Acetic acid is a strong acid that will break down most compounds that will linger in cloth, glass, and plastic..
