I lose at Halloween

I was so excited because this is the first year I've lived in a neighborhood and had the possibility of trick or treaters. However I got off work late (630) and it's been pouring all day, so I bought one little pack of Reese's cups. Whoops. One group came by and THEY ARE ALL GONE. Holy smokes! DH is visiting family so I had to turn all the lights and everything off and run to the store. Luckily there's a dollar general right next to our neighborhood. But seriously! I just bought three big bags so I'm sure I'm not going to get anymore tonight....

We did a second run last year.  We bought 500 pieces this year, budgeting on 2 per kid.  We had about 170 last year.  So far, 1 hour 20 min since the first kid, we're at 145

ETA - not quite 2 hours in, 7:30 as we're past last year.  Over 170 now.  It started lightly raining a bit, so maybe that scared some kids away this year.

    WOW.
ETA: A family just came by. They brought their cat along. That is a new one for me. I put some dog biscuits in the bottom of the trick or treat basket (I always had a matching outfit with my dog- pumpkin/scarecrow, Elvis/poodle skirt, wizard/queen, Maid Marian/Robin Hood)... But I didn't prepare for a cat.
  • We haven't had a single one come by.   Not surprised.  But I do have a small bag just in case.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • We don't get trick or treaters. Our neighborhood sucks for Halloween so we went out with friends of DD in their neighborhood.
  • You have to climb a bunch of stairs to get up to the places in our neighborhood.  Just a few blocks over there is a wealthier neighborhood with no stairs to climb up.   I know where I would be and it ain't my neighborhood.

  • We got a few. Ine little boy kncoked on the door, waited 2 seconds and took it on himself to walk right in. I calmly told him that he should'nt walk into people's houses and told him to go outside and try again.

It was kind of cute, he mumbled sorry, closed the door, knocked again, said trick or treat, said thank you after I gave him candy. I don't think he'll do that again.

  • Just had two pre-teen boys come by. Lots of candy left, so I told them they could have a few. One of the boys was wearing big paw gloves as part of his costume. Somehow, "a few" became a pawful. Whatever. They seemed like decent kids and had some of the better costumes of the night.

I had a 20 year old.  He had a full beard.  And a few Dads collecting a second bag after their 2 year old filled up.  Really people??  We hit 193.  So close to 200, but it started raining, so I think that killed it.  We had less than 1 box left, so I'm good with what we bought.  Went over to see my niece and nephew who looked awesome.

    ETA - I can't spell

  • It was a fun night! Glad to hear others had a good turn out.. we had 138 kids this year, it rained all day and eased up by the night time, by the end of the night I was telling them to take hand fulls to get rid of it! Still have some left so I'm going to take it to our local antique mall in the morning where I'm friends with the owner and tell him to put it out for his customers.

My fave of the night was a little girl dressed as Cruella de Vil and her little friend was her dalmatian.

My neighborhood is somewhat upscale, and we live at the entrance of our development.  Every Halloween we see people bringing kids and teens in from other areas by the truckload.  I am being quite literal.  Pickup trucks filled with kids in costume.  I don't know why they do this. They park on our street near our home.  We don't have many kids in our neighborhood.
I don't mind.  I gave out more than 100 candy bars.  DH did his telescope astronomy show.  (He has a 12 inch Dobsonian GoTo computerized monster.)  To the really in-to-it kids, he gave star charts from his astronomy club.  (He's the president.)  We had several nerds in the making that forgot all about trick or treating, and just wanted to see the telescope.  Their parents were very happy to bring them back for a second look.

  • We give out full size candy bars to try and lure kids to our cul de sac. If kids are like they were when I trick or treated, everyone knows the houses that give the good stuff.

It was cold and rainy this year so we only got like 10 kids. :( To the last group, I basically dumped a candy store into their bags. You would have thought I was giving them a free trip to Disney world.

  • We had very few kids come by. My husband bought boring candy, (caramels and Tootsie Rolls) and now we have that left over. Booh.

  • I was working, but FI said that we had about 25 kids come. According to the people next door, that's about average for our neighborhood (not too many kids). It was pretty chilly last night, and I know for sure that a lot of kids didn't come out to the firehouse because of the road construction. In years past the firehouse usually averages around 250 kids, but this year we got around 130.

  • Weather was actually ok here instead of rain last few years so we had a lot of kids. Last year maybe 10, this year 60+ we ran out of candy at 8pm which was fine since we were ready to eat dinner. Was a little bummed not to have some left over. H keeps bitching that I suck and wouldn't let him buy more befor hand - uh whatever we had 3 good sized bags and the last 2 years we've had bags left over so I'm happy with what we had.

We never have trick or treaters so I ended up going to a costume party. While driving to the party, I noticed that there were crossing guards working that night to help kids to cross the streets. I have never seen that for Halloween but though it was a great idea.
  • We only got around 15 kids total. Granted, I live in a small town, but last year when it was raining and even colder we had more. I'm now sitting in my office at work, staring at a giant bowl of candy that my H made me get out of the house.
  • We only got 4 kids, one family. We're flabbergasted because there are at least three or four families we know in the neighborhood and apparently none of them came by. Even our next door neighbors, their son loves H, they didn't come by either. It's the first year in our new house, but we're disappointed because we were looking forward to having trick or treaters. If this keeps up we'll have to start crashing at friend's houses because I love seeing all the kids in costume.

  • This was our first Halloween in our house too.  We have lots of kids in our development, so we were a little scared as to how many kids we would get.  We don't really count, but we probably had around 50ish.  We have a bunch of candy left over, H took some for himself and I took some for me.  The rest I have brought into work, they are collecting the extra candy to send it overseas to troops stationed there!

I will say that the first group of kids I got, were about 5-6 13 year old boys.  I gave them their candy and they left.  Then a few minutes later, another knock.  I open the door again and its the same boys, but with their masks down.  I still recognized them and just laughed and said, "Really guys?"  And they ran away laughing with one of them saying, "See I told you it wouldn't work!"  However, at the time, H was upstairs showering.  If he had been down with me, my H would have answered the door (we take turns) and given them more candy!  So they just had really bad timing!

  • My neighborhood has no street lights or sidewalks, and few children, so the only ones we got were our next door neighbor's kids, before it got dark.  I had a little bag of candy ready for them.

But we went to a friend's house for a party and they were inundated with kids...we ended up taking turns answering the door. They live in a new development surrounded by older less expensive houses so all the kids from those neighborhoods came to theirs LOL

One little boy was dressed as Danny Zuko, complete with the little Tbirds jacket and the slicked hair... he was maybe 2 or 3... After I gave him some candy he says "FANK YOU!!!"  My ovaries hurt after that one.

I had a kid about 12-13 also in a penguin costume and he and another boy trick or treated then ran across the street to join friends at another house. Well then his group comes to our house and he trick or treats again - I was like wait a minute you were just here. He's like nu uh I've never been here, I've been with the group the whole time. I just laughed and said I don't believe you but whatever here's another piece.  I hear one of his friends go "you're such a liar" in the background haha
  • We have a ton of kids come by we bought 300 pieces of candy, and gave out most of them, with only giving each kid one piece. we live on the border of rural Indiana and all those kids come over to our neighborhood to trick or treat. this is the first year in 3 years of living in this neighborhood that it has not rained, so it was a great turn out..

My H stays behind and passes out candy, and I take the 5 year old around with the neighbor and her kids, then we sat and ate chili until candy passing time was over, then had a fire with the neighbors while the kids played.

My son was Thomas the Train's conductor, but he wouldn't get out of his wagon decorated to be Thomas, lucky in our neighborhood people sit in their driveway and pass out candy, the whole neighborhood is really into it.

Friday my neighbor and I got together. We carved pumpkins and ate chili then we watched hocus pocus and she drank wine - I had tea.

We never get many trick-or-treaters but I always buy extra candy just in case. I dress up and light my jack-o-lanterns. I think we got about 15 trick-or-treaters.

  • You guys with a lot of kids are lucky!!! I over bought.  By a lot.  It's my first year in my house, so I really had NO idea what to purchase. Now I know!  We had rain too, which may have helped.

  • First Halloween in our house. My neighbors told me we don't get trick-or-treaters, but I bought some candy just in case way back in the beginning of October. After eating all the good stuff all month and leaving only the Baby Ruths and Butterfingers, no one showed up. It was a good gamble. ;)

  • Man, I wish we got more trick or treaters! We live on a pretty busy street, and usually we get two or three kids/groups per year. It was POURING all day and night this Halloween, so we were shocked when even one single child came to our door. Oddly enough, I thought it was my sister, since the kid tried to open the door before knocking loudly (he was probably five and forgot that you don't just open strangers' doors).
