NWR - Work Rumors

I wish people would just shut up on the rumors going around our office/company.

So I work at a large global company, but my office is small (6 people on a good day). I started in March after leaving my old company which I worked at miserably for 3 years after a year long job search. Well in June, my new company bought my old company. I knew it was going to happen since it almost happened 5 years ago but fell through and negotiations started up again last fall.

This wouldn't really affect me in the day to day other than the fact that there have been rumors about my current office moving into my old office. No one in my office really wants to do this for several reasons; we want to move downtown, the old office is super outdated, etc...

Well about once every week or two more rumors fly that we are moving there, it is just a matter of when. My boss said it may not happen until next year since our lease is up in September but I was talking to a guy who still works at old company that it may happen next month! I'm going crazy with all this back and forth about it. I realize that it is inevitable that our offices will merge but I just want to know when.

Re: NWR - Work Rumors

  • That is annoying! Work rumors suck, for overall morale and all related uncertainties.

But, how much would this really affect you? Would it cause you to feel the need to find a new job?  Is the commute going to cost you more money in terms of gas in the car, or would the commute change a schedule you're happy with?

If I were you, I'd either vent and then get over it-- what will be, will be-- or put together your contingency plan and be ready for that plan whenever the time does finally come.

The decision on to move, not to move, when, and where, is so outside of your control it's not worth stressing over. Just plan.

It shouldn't be cause to find a new job. My reasons for leaving my old company were mainly due the 'team' I was on. And we will be put in a different area, so I won't have to deal with them.

The commute would actually get shorter for me, which is funny because when I took my current job the commute got shorter, but I've moved since then. And an added bonus would be that FI and I could carpool since he still works at my old company (it is where we met).

I just venting because we hear new things every week and it is exhausting. We know it is going to happen and hopefully we won't be in those offices for very long.
  • I feel you. The bank I work at just merged with another bank. For months there were rumors swirling about how many people were going to get severance packages, how things were going to be restructured, etc. It does get exhausting after a while!

  • They really aren't rumors anymore, but for years it has gone around my job that we will be moving our offices to a not so nice area.  They have been trying to build up this area.  They have now been giving lots of tax breaks to companies moving to this area.  Assuming we also get one of these tax breaks, our COO said we will be moving.  But things still need to be built, so it would be at least 4 years before we move.  While not happy with potentially working in the not so nice area, I'm not too concerned overall.

My last job, the rumors started there that they would be laying off people.  And since I was the last one hired, I'd probably be the first one to go.  Those are the work rumors I don't like.  Moving, while inconvenient, allows you to at least still have a job.  I hated having to go to work every day not knowing if I would be given a layoff notice.  It's not a good feeling.  So after a while, I started looking for a new job and ended up being hired by my current place.

Try to brush off these rumors.  Moving to a different office isn't that bad when you compare it to not having a job anymore.  If anyone tries to tell them to you just say that you aren't going to worry about that until the time comes where they officially announce it.

  • I'm with you.  The VP of HR (who I work for) is "retiring" at the end of the year.  Any time someone at that level leaves, there's potential for you to get shit-canned when the next person comes in.  It's quietly discussed, but I don't think super-active on the rumor mill.  A lot of people are happy she's leaving...

I think I'll be spending the "slow" days around Christmas getting my resume together.  While I don't like it here, I could use the stability through at least this coming June on my resume when I'll have 3 years here.  If I get laid off though, it wouldn't devastate me from a happiness at work perspective.  It would make paying bills a lot more scary, but I would be glad to leave the craziness behind here.

  • I work for a company that has bought quite a few competitors since I have been there, so I know how frustrating the lack of communication can be, which leads to rumors.  All you can do, really, is wait it out, and be grateful that you've been there before so you kind of know the ropes.

I have to ask though, are you currently downtown or will you move downtown?  Because I will trade you for a job downtown haha.  I miss working down there so bad but it's not in the cards for my industry:).

We are not currently downtown. We want to move downtown because our office's biggest client is downtown and the company we just bought's biggest client is in Dearborn, and downtown is much closer to Dearborn than where the company is located now.
