Are Y'all Sick of Talking About Skin Issues Yet?

So I know we perpetually seem to have these types of thread but I'm looking for some info to follow-up a visit to the dermatologist that I had the other day.

I went off of birth control pills in June because I decided to use charting and temping as my method of pregnancy prevention. Ever since then my skin has been FREAKING THE EFF OUT acne-wise- my face is manageable but my back and chest are disgusting, particularly in the last three or so months.

So I made myself wait about six months to give my hormones a chance to calm down and then got a referral to a dermatologist, whom I saw two days ago.

Basically my course of treatment is three-pronged: an antibiotic to kill the bacteria in my acne and reduce inflammation, a retinoid cream to cause my skin cells to regenerate more quickly and a shampoo that I'm supposed to use on my skin that has something to do with yeast.

It's this last part that I'm curious about, because I didn't think to get a full explanation from the doctor- what is the relationship of yeast and acne?

Also anyone else been through a similar course of treatment? Any advice as to how long it'll take for stuff to clear up?

Re: Are Y'all Sick of Talking About Skin Issues Yet?

  • I don't know about the treatment plan but I went off BC around the same time and have noticed similar issues on my back/shoulders and jawline. It isn't so bad that I would seek treatment but certainly annoying.

I've been charting too and dang mine is all over the place I would be afraid to use it for prevention
  • All I know is that they told me that I would outgrow acne when I was a teenager.  Well, THEY LIED!

  • I don't have any experience with the last part, but I have done the antibiotics and retinoid cream. I had cystic acne in my early 20's and ended up doing a round of Accutane. So, I feel you! It is a big pain in the butt. I haven't had any serious issues in the last 6 years, but I still have nightmares that I wake up to my face being broken out like it used to be!

  • @themosthappy91 I'm going through the same thing with my skin now. I stopped taking BC pills in July and got an IUD (Mirena) in August. I've never had great skin but now it's gotten awful. My skin is greasy, I've got acne all along my jawline and under my chin, on my chest, and on my butt and thighs. I've also given myself a few more months before I go to a derm but it's so gross. It's gotten to the point where I almost want to take the IUD out and go back on BC pills because there's such a marked difference in my hair and skin after going off of it.
  • @cupcait927 that's exactly why I went off the Mirena. My skin was out of control. It's gotten better being on the non-hormonal IUD.

For my back and chest, I use that Neutogena acne wash and make sure to wash my back again after I rinse out the conditioner from my hair. The conditioner running down my back wasn't helping the breakouts.

I also cut back on dairy and drink an asston of water. I still get some yuckiness around my period but little things like that can help.

  • @ShesSoCold I'm glad to hear I'm not alone! I'm going to try the Neutrogena acne wash to see if that helps with my body acne. I'm also going to cut back on the dairy - I'd already been planning on it since H needs to as well. He's got eczema and the dairy makes it flare up so it'll just be easier if we both cut it out for a little while and get back on track with our skin issues.

It was horrible. I was still getting my period and my skin, which I had spent ten years finally getting under control, was crazy. I saw no upside to the Mirena and oddly my skin is better with no hormones at all! My skin still isn't great but it's definitely better.

I have used this to.  In fact I need to start using it again because things are beginning to flare up on my back which is so not cool!  And since I usually get showers in the morning, at night before I go to bed, I try to use a makeup remover wipe to wipe off my back to get any dirt/oil off.

I also was tempted to do this- just go back on the pills to fix my overwhelming oiliness- but I do eventually want kids (like 2-3 years) so I'd rather deal with my skin now than go off the pill to get pregnant and then be combatting horrible skin issues while trying to get pregnant/during pregnancy. Just something to consider if you are in a similar boat.

It's so weird that the Pill is much better for these things than other hormonal birth control options. Not last summer but the summer before I got Nexplanon, the arm implant birth control, and went off it after about 7-8 months because I thought it was making my skin a greasy, acne-covered mess. Come to find out now, it wasn't causing that, it was just the absence of the pill.
  • @themosthappy91 If H and I had to make the decision today, we'd never have kids. I don't feel a strong desire and while he knows he'd be an awesome dad, H doesn't want to have them just because he knows he'd be good at it. Granted, this could change, but I'm fairly confident that it won't. The Mirena is great because I'm much more confident in its success rate (I'm terrible at remembering a pill every day) but it's causing so much other havoc with my body.
  • OK since this has gone the birth control route, how many of you have tried the stick in your arm? or have heard of people using it? what issues/good have you had with it? I am on the pill, but like @cupcait927 said I am horrible at taking it.. I tried the shot it made me BSC.. and the IUD scares me with all the issues friends have had with it.

My sister has the arm thing. She has a very random period every once in a while that is totally random and unpredictable. She said it hurt like a bitch and her arm was really bruised when it was put in. They last three years and she's almost up - I'm curious/horrified to see how they fish it out of there.

This is the reason I do not have one..

I can deal with the rando monthly, I wouldn't mind the reassurance that I am not pregnant.. I expect pain, since they put a stick the size of a match in your arm.

That is exactly why I didn't go with the arm thing. I could only imagine how painful it would be going in (and getting shots makes me have a panic attack) and didn't even want to know how they got it back out again.
  • Apparently if you google it, you can see a YouTube video on Nexplanon removal. No thank you.
  • I had the stick in the arm birth control (Nexplanon) as I mentioned previously and it literally barely hurt to get in and out, I kid you not. To the best of my knowledge I don't have a particularly high pain threshold and I can name so many things- period cramps, lip waxes, allergy headaches- that have hurt way worse in my life. It bruises up pretty bad so it looks like it hurts more than it does.

From what I've heard from people who have had both getting an IUD is 10000x more painful. I've never gone the IUD route but I believe it because pain wasn't a factor for Nexplanon. I had other issues with it (or thought I did at least...) but insertion and removal was not one.

  • It's not just BC pills - my skin went crazy when I went off Nuvaring.  That was a very dumb thing to do 6 months before my wedding, by the way!  I'm back on it now... sort of.  I didn't get my rx this month due to a pharmacy mix up.  Hopefully my skin can handle the break!
