Our venue contract states that they have a right to post photos of our wedding on their website to promote weddings at the venue. Is this standard? And what if we don't want pictures of our wedding posted on their website?

We haven't hired the DJ or photographer yet, but now it makes me wonder if they have similar things in their contracts. Is there a way around this?

    If it's in the contract, I assume you have to agree to it, but you could always ask.
    What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

    You need to negotiate it before you sign the contract. Although anyone can take a photo of you in public, a person or business needs your permission to your image to make money. 

    If you've already signed the contract, there's probably not much you can do. If you haven't signed, it shouldn't be difficult to negotiate out that provision.

    You also might want to ask them in which specific photos they would have interest.  At my DD's wedding, they used a photo from the reception to use as an example of how their room could be transformed.  No people were in any of the photos they used.

    Generally the photos posted have no people in them, used more so to show different set ups/styles/colours/etc. I used to work at a hotel and they would take photos of the set up before the events started and put them in a portfolio. Serves as inspiration for other clients.

    But if you are very uncomfortable with that you might be able to negotiate it out entirely, or add in that no people can be in the photos. We negotiated contracts quite a bit depending on the client.

    In your situation, I can't imagine that the venue wouldn't agree with not publishing photos of you and your guests, but you should get it in writing.
