Lilly centerpieces/bouquets

Does anyone have any ideas about how much something like this might cost me at a florist or DIY? My wedding is still 18 months out, but I keep debating on DIY or having a florist do it. I don't need a huge bouquet, and lillies are my absolute favorite. I would also like to pair a light coral color flower with something likethis for centerpieces, but I'm not sure of the best complimentary flower to use.

Re: Lilly centerpieces/bouquets

  • Since flower prices vary by region I would take this photo to a local florist and see what they say.

I know that it looks like it is just stems of lilies wrapped together but to get that fullness and roundness, I would bet that the lily heads were removed from the stems and then arranged in a bouquet holder.  Then the stems were glued around hte bouquet holder to give the illusion that it is just handtied.  Also, to get a good mass of lilies you would need quite a few stems.  Typically you can get 2-3 good lily heads off one stem of lilies and that is if all the buds pop open nicely.

As for the centerpieces, roses are always a great accent flower with lilies and they come in some great coral colors.  Or you could always use gerber daisies but I don't find them to be as romantic as roses.

  • Those are asiatic lillies, and to purchase in bulk is not that expensive. I made our centerpieces from White Asiatic Lillies I bought in bulk from Costco.

Picture here. The long green grasses came with the lillies and were a pleasant surprise:

The pictures available from the link you provided look like they have about 8-12 lillies per bouquet. A lilly "stem" has anywhere from 2-5 flowers on it, but they open up along the stem from bottom to top. They aren't all open at the same time, generally. But they do last 3-5 days after opening, they last longer if you trim off the orange tips of the stamen, which those have had done to them.

I ordered my bulk white lillies from Costco. If you don't have a Costco membership, ask family and friends (I understand Sam's Club has similar flowers, but never checked). I got the name of the local independent florist who arranged the bouquets for the floral kiosk at the local Costco and called her. It was possible to order bulk flowers directly from her, which I did. That way I saw them before paying for them. I ordered 96 (8 dozen) white Vendella long stemmed roses, 80 stems of white Asiatic Lillies, and 2 large bunches of baby's breath, it cost $173. That was just for my centerpieces however, because I ordered the 20 piece white rose wedding package for $399 for our bouquets, bouts, corsages.

At Costco's website, here, 150 stems of Asiatic Lillies are $99.99 . Remember, each stem will have 2-3 flowers on it, sometimes as many as 5.

They come in different colors, including white.

I understand there are several videos online to make bouquets, it's really not that hard. However, because the lillies are up and down the stem, some of them will have shorter stems, but still long enough to fit into a bouquet holder IMO.

    Good luck.
  • can you have just one in the arrangement? i love lillies too, and my bouquet was a mix of baby's breath, ivy, white orchids, deep red roses, ivory roses and one large lilly.
my BM's also had 1 lilly in their arragements.  it made it look special =)

keeping your flowers in-season and adding one or two blooms of something special/out of season will help keep the cost lower than doing ALL of one expensive flower.

I'm choosing asiatic/oriental lillies (not calla lillies) because they are 1)My absolute favorite 2)In season for July and 3)Far less expensive then roses and other flowers on a per stem basis.

Considering the Costco price of $99.99 for 150 stems of asiatic lillies with 2-5 flowers per stem, I would be paying $0.66 per stem. So even 5 stems (10-25 flowers) per BM bouquet would cost under $10 each. I don't personally want a huge bridal boquet, so I think that this would be the way to go. I would likely pair baby's breath with the boquets and centerpieces and then maybe coral roses in the centerpieces. I think DIY would work much better, my Grandma as done silk flower bouquets for years, so I think we could figure out real ones like this :)
