Suits tailored for women??

Hello all! I am getting married next September, 2015. My fiance will be wearing a dress, but I am not a dress type of girl. I am on the butch side, if you want to label it. I do not want to wear a tux, but would like to wear a suit that is flattering but not extremely feminine. I am a curvy girl and cannot purchase a men's suit because it will not contour to my body. Any help or suggestions would be amazing as to where to start looking for a suit. I know that there are companies that cater to butch women and trans men, but their suits are so pricey, (and not where I live) and I am trying to keep the price down since we are paying for most of this wedding ourselves. You can actually get a men's suit and have it tailored and you won't be able to tell that it was a men's suit. My partner is butch and curvy, and as long as the alterations are done right, a men's suit will fit you like a glove. Try Men's Wearhouse.

For what it's worth, the photo below is a Jones NY tux from men's wearhouse. And here is another suit (Calvin Klein) my partner is wearing from MW. Professionally altered and fit perfectly. My partner likes the sleeves a little longer, so that is the only part that looked "big", but that was by choice.

Thank you for your reply! My fiance is just worried that if I get a men's suit, it will not look good and the shoulders will be too broad. I have a bigger chest and that's where the problem comes in with a men's suit. I have found some women's suits that aren't extremely feminine looking. I must say it is a lot easier for my fiance to find a dress ;-P

hahaha. They can take in the shoulders. That's what they did with my partner's suit. The literally unstitched the sleeves, and brought in the shoulders. It was like 20 extra bucks. My partner is bigger chested too. I know where you are coming from

Also, choose a three button suit, not a two button. The two button suits (even if they are men's or women's cut suits), stop right at the bottom of your chest and almost flashes a sign LOOK AT MY BOOBS HERE! The three button suit will button at the mid-chest point and really helps.

Thank you so much for all of your help! I have some time since my wedding isnt until September 2015, but thought that I would at least get some ideas and stuff. How is their pricing at men's warehouse? I know that I want a suit and not a tux.

Just wanted to weigh in. I'm in a similar situation. I went to Men's Warehouse and they were amazing. Didn't bat an eyelash when I said I wanted a suit for my wedding. I'm skinny and don't have broad shoulders at all. They were able to find my size and said they could tailor it in basically any way that I needed. They were a little pricey, but I would've gone back when they had a sale. Sometimes if you bring in an old suit they will give you 50% off etc or have a buy one, get one free sale, etc. Don't ever pay full price at MW.

I ended up going to a local mom & pop place for my tux rental. They were also awesome and had a suit that fit me. I chose a slim fit so it better contoured my body - I'm not big chested tho

This is really good advice because we were wondering this ourselves since my fiancé would never be comfortable in a dress! I looked into bespoke suits but then I realized how much that would cost - we are way too poor, lol.

We found my curvy butch partner's suit at Dillards. It's a one button, which works better with her curves. The two button just hit wrong and made her look thicker than she is because it made the chest size the same as the waist size.

I totally agree with this. Most 2 button suits do not look good on females. 1 button or 3 button is the way to go. 2 buttons hit right in the chest and cause an ugly gap across the chest.

Mens wearhouse will only alter purchased suits/tuxes. If you rent, they will sort of "pin" the tux to fit, but it won't be fitted like a suit that's actually specifically for you.

There are a few places in Portland (Duchess mentioned above), NY, San Francisco and Oakland who do custom suits and get really good reviews. I think they range between $1000-$2000.
