Marriage planning for planners and the morbid

This might not be the right board for this, but might apply to those who are interested in premarital or pre-cana counseling:

At the risk of sounding macabre, FI and I are creating heathcare directives and wills prior to our honeymoon just in case the unthinkable happens, and I found a website for free, fast, and legally-binding wills, called willing.com, which I wanted to share if anyone else is interested.

That site also has an upgrade cost if you want your heathcare advance directive/POA form, but I found that you can also get that free elsewhere if you hunt a little. For instance, I live in Pennsylvania, and when I looked on pa.state.us, I searched for 'advance directive' and found a link to create one that's also free.

Good luck and happy planning!

  • You sound like a vendor.

  • Ooookay. I guess that's what it sounds like to you when someone passes on tips for things that are free and then suggests ways to avoid paying for services that are free elsewhere. ;)

From having dealt with all things (effed up) Wills for far too many years now...  Hire the attorney to do it properly and advise you on what some things mean if they're put in front of a court of law..  The Will you write now is not the Will you'd write when any future children are 40 (though write it "as-if" for their sake because .. just do it as if they've become responsible adults!), but it is what everything defaults to if someone produces a legal challenge.  You want an attorney to draft things up, signed by a notary, not DIY because you ultimately want your wishes followed posthumously...  An attorney will also go through things like a Will vs. a Trust and ease of changing things in the future.  Do it right, not "just because", but certainly don't just wait around...
