NWR:Resignation help

I don't go back to work until the 7th from my time off from the wedding and honeymoon. I'm planning on resigning. Should I give them the 2 weeks from my day back or can I give it starting today and make the last day the 14th?  I guess I'm asking should I give them 2 actual working weeks or can I include my last week of vacation plus 1 working week?

    Read your company manual to see if they'll still pay you for your vacation time if you start your notice today.  Is there a date you need to be done by?  That'd be the second timeline I'd review.

    I resigned from a job right before vacation before.   In my case, I gave my 2 weeks a week before my scheduled vacation.  I used my vacation time as the 2nd week.  So technically I only gave them one week notice since  I didn't have PTO (had arranged with them to take the time off when I got the job.)   I hated the job, was only there a few months anyway. 

    In your case I would be asking yourself some questions

    Do you have another job line up and have to start by a certain time?  Do you need a reference from them?    

     If I didn't have another job lined up I would be inclined to give them 2 actual working weeks.   It helps them and I get another week of pay.     Actually, I quit a job and gave them 30 days because I didn't have another job lined up and I didn't want to screw them.  Plus I got the an extra 2 weeks of pay.  They asked me to stay another week, but I declined.


    Another time I gave 2 weeks notice and my boss told me not to bother coming back.    Not big deal, I figured he would do that, so I picked that date knowing I would be able to go away without having to ask off.   He fell right into my plan  :) 


    sounds like I quit jobs often.   Ha.  Not really the case, I'm just older then most of you.







    What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated. 
  • I agree with Lynda and I think it depends on the job/place. Would they be scrambling to replace you and would it be really difficult for someone else to absorb your work? Or do you think they're likely to just let you go the day you give your notice? Personally I'd try to give them two full working weeks.

  • What kind of work do you do? In something more professional or a little higher up the food chain, I would absolutely give two weeks of working notice. They need to have some time to replace you, but it's also customary that you'll assist in training a new person or a fill-in so they aren't left in the lurch. 

    On the other hand, if you're in the sort of roll where there are several people that do the same or similar job (e.g. customer service), it should be ok to let some of your notice run while you're on vacation. You'll still probably want to wrap a few things up and give them time to cover your shifts, but you won't be training a specific person to take on your tasks. 
  • Im an RN and work in home health. I'm not getting paid for my vacation because ive only been there since May.  I'll give them 2 working weeks. Thanks for the input.
