Help me find a skirt

I am looking for a pencil skirt can be black, grey or with a simple design. Hopefully good quality and <$30.

where do you shop online?

Re: Help me find a skirt

  • H&M almost always has good, affordable skirts like that. I just went to their website and typed "pencil skirt" in the search bar and it brought up 29 different styles.

While they are above your budget, I've always liked The Limited's pencil skirts.  They are classic and have held up really well for me.

They are on sale right now for just under $45, but I think they are worth the cost.  ETA - some are under $30

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Depends on what kind of quality you want. Just a knit pencil skirt? I would try Target, they have great clothes. If you're looking for something a little more substantial/structured, ditto the Limited or maybe Express?
  • I agree with @lyndausvi & @PamBeesly524 : The Limited has really nice and affordable pencil skirts, not to mention the fabric feel really comfortable.

I would agree that Target or H&M are your best options for just being under $30. However, I'm a big believer that you get what you pay for. Pencil skirts are classic staples you could have for years (if you don't change sizes of course) and wear tons of different ways. I'm a big fan of White House Black Market and they always have different things on sale or clearance. They have tons of work-appropriate stuff and though their regular prices are high, the prices can drop substantially- right now they have a few pencil skirts on sale for $40.

ETA: Try Banana Republic and Ann Taylor sales too.

To the 1st bolded I agree! Which is why I want good quality and I am always searching for sales/clearance at WHBM and Express. I bought some pants at burlington for $15. After 3 uses the seams started to come off and the one that goes under and over the butt area broke while I was in a project!

After that I swore to but quality items even if price is higher and I needed to stalk clearance section.

I love WHBM and I often buy from them from the sale area usually under $30 but ATM they don't have anything of my liking for that price.

I would not mind spending up to $50 normally but right now money is kind of tight and I would love to have a new one that fits a little better than my current one (I am in need of one).

    Checking out Limited and Loft

    thanks ladies!! :)

  • I've had good luck with H&M but usually go to the store.  Not necessarily for pencil skirts but the L.O.G.G. section has pretty decent quality, especially if you buy 100% wool sweaters & 100% cotton button-downs.  I have H&M dresses & skirts that have lasted over 8 years that I get constant compliments for, especially the fitted dresses that are lined.  I also have a few H&M blazers that are awesome --- very feminine and well-fitting --- though with the exception of the L.O.G.G one they were worn thin in the elbow after about 2 years of very frequent use.  But it really depends on your body type; I happen to find the H&M fit very flattering and have a tough time finding stuff that's well-fitted (dresses and shirts with darts, etc) even at 3x the price.  [Also, I'm Swedish so I'm a bit biased since it's a Swedish store but seriously have shopped [selectively] at H&M for 20+ years and am often surprised by the quality]

As for pencil skirts in general, look for something that has good lining.  Also, this may seem like a given, but there are some pencil skirts that don't have slits and I try to avoid those.  Like, what's the point of having a slightly-above-the-knee fitted skirt if it's not going to have the sexiness of a back slit?  You probably already know this, but you should hand wash a pencil skirt so you don't mess up the lining or overall shape.

I found this one by Merona that seems to have good reviews, considering the price you may be able to order two sizes initially and return the one that doesn't fit:

In the future you may consider JCrew.  IMO quality overall has deteriorated in the past 5 years, but the no. 2 pencil skirt in wool seems to be an exception; I have 3 of them.  It's also quite sexy, think Mad Men.  The skirt retails for ~$120 - $140 but you can get really good deals during sales, especially if you're not too picky about color.  Now that JCrew *finally* has online reviews it's easier to figure out what will work:

    Good luck!
  • I just bought two skirts from the Loft that I LOVE. Here is one of them (http://www.loft.com/petite-diamond-jacquard-pull-on-skirt/398546?skuId=20290863&defaultColor=6202&colorExplode=false&catid=catl000039) Pricey but they often have sales. I got mine on black Friday for 50% off.
