Lipodemia?

Has anyone ever heard of this, or is it just a scam for plastic surgeons?
I started gaining weight after the birth of my children.  I became a plus size, but most of the weight is below my waist.  My upper body and neck area doesn't appear that big, but I have a huge bag in front of my stomach (old fashioned c-sections) and there are bags of fat just below my knees.  My legs can swell to look like sausages when traveling, but not my feet.  I am thinking of consulting my plastic surgeon $$$$.
For so many years, my Mom harangued me about my weight gain.  Now I'm beginning to think it isn't just a simple weight issue.

Re: Lipodemia?

  • I've heard of it while watching my 600 lb life.  I don't think they can typically be cured, but I did see one girl who had to go get treatments which were like big blood pressure cuff type things on her calves.

  • I've never heard of this, so I googled it- interesting! (though not for the person who has it).

From what I read (albeit not a tonne), lipodemia once developed remains permanently (which is why surgery is required) vs fluid retention- thus it would not come and go so "easily" as with travel.

Seems the first start is to talk to your doctor though... hopefully (s)he is at least familiar with it enough to refer you on.
  • I haven't ever heard of this before either, so I googled it too. From what I read it seems that this condition isn't the same as weight gain and has a different course of treatment, including surgery if applicable. If I were you I'd definitely consult with my doctor.

I am hoping to have the knee bags removed so I won't have to be so sensitive about my ugly legs.  DH doesn't care.  I cannot wear surgical stockings when I travel because the top of the stockings won't fit over them.  Ditto for any knee high stockings.  Thigh highs?  Forget about it!
The last two times we traveled overseas, I paid for economy plus seats that allowed me more leg room.  I also got up every few hours and did leg stretches and shallow knee bends to keep things circulating.  My legs were better than on other trips where I was more confined.
I know I am stuck with potato butt and ugly thighs, but I can more easily keep those under wraps.
All those years I was feeling guilty for my weight gain, and now I find out that it wasn't my fault at all!  Damn hormones!
I have already consulted with my GP and a knee specialist, who confirmed the diagnosis.  Plastic surgeon is the next step.

  • I would consult with a Plastic surgeon and see what your options are. But just like any other doctor, do your research. You don't want a cut rate surgeon working on you.

I'm going back to the doctor who did my boobs seven years ago.  Considering that one is fake and one is real, but reshaped to match the other, they look great.  I'm going to have the best tits in the nursing home if I live that long!;)

    Lipedema  is a real condition.

Lipidemia is also a condition, also know as hyperlipidemia which is having high levels of cholesterol in your blood and can increase your risks of having coronary artery disease and hear attacks.
