Face moisturizer recommendations.

I typically use Simple Replenishing face moisturizer & it works great...until recently.

Due to the colder temps, the skin on my face is so dry you can see white flakes, especially around my mouth and nose. Does anyone have any great moisturizer recommendations?

*Edited because I accidentally hit post too early.

Re: Face moisturizer recommendations.

  • I currently use Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel (not the lotion). It works great for me year round. I have acne prone skin so I have to be careful with what I use. My MIL uses the lotion and says it feels amazing but it made me break out the time I used it. If you don't have acne prone skin it could work for you.

During the winter my skin does get dryer so I use Vitamin E oil at night for extra moisture but keep the same moisturizer for the day because it works well with my makeup.

  • I have the same issues!  I was at the dermatologist the other day and she recommended Cetaphil.  It works better than anything else I have ever tried.  It feels light when you put it on, but keeps the dry flakies away all day.
  • I'm a believer in Cetaphil.  I have combination skin and live in Michigan so in addition to an oily T-zone, my skin dries out more in the winter too and I have no problems with this moisturizer.

  • My skin is Sahara-level dry so I feel your pain!

Cerave Moisturizing Cream (blue label) is great for nighttime. It feels super thick at first but if your skin is as dry is mine (and it sounds like it), it will soak it all in after 60 seconds or so. Then I apply Vaseline as an emollient on my dry patches, which for me are my entire brow bone, under eye area, and about half an inch on either side of my nose. In the AM I just use my standard Olay All Day Moisturizer in the sensitive skin formula. It's really light.

Question. Are you using any kind of scrub or cleanser with beads or grit in it? When I first started learning about taking care of dry skin I thought I needed to exfoliate/scrub off the flakes, but that can actually aggravate the area worse and cause more dry flakes, not fewer! So I'd stop that ASAP if you're doing it and just use a creamy (non-foaming) cleanser with your hands or a microfiber washcloth.

Also look into a humidifier for your bedroom. Winter BLOWS for those of us with super dry skin!

  • I use Aveeno Ultra Calming Moisturizer. It helps reduce redness (mine gets red when it's dry) and really keeps my skin hydrated. It's fragrance free, too.

  • The spa I went to got me into Éminence Organic Skincare.  I use the scrubs, lotions, tonics etc. etc.   It smells wonderful and I never had a problem with anything so far.

  • I use Okay Regenerist Night Recovery Moisturizing Treatment cream for overnight and it works great. I have an oily T-zone, but get super dry on the sides and under my eyes on my temple and cheek bones. The olay cream soothes the red, itchy part and I have no flakiness anymore when I wake up.

My eyelids get super dry too for some reason, and I have dry, irritated skin all the way up to and through my lash and brow lines. When that happens, I also use Garnier Clean + Nourishing Cleansing Oil for Dry Skin. That stuff is safe to use on and around your eyes. I rub it all over my face, eyes included, and then let it sit for 15-30 minutes before I rinse it off. It helps a lot, especially on the delicate skin around my eyes.

Agree with this. I asked the girl doing my facial about stuff such as the St. Ives Apricot scrub and she said it's horrible for your skin because the particles are too large and cause tears in the skin. She said an exfoliant should not feel like sandpaper or it's doing damage.

So I just got a kit by Mario Badescu at Ulta and it's a tad pricey but I'm obsessed with it. The kiwi exfoliant scrub (creamy cleanser not sandpaper), the flower tonic mask, the daily moisturizer. It's the only moisturizer I've tried that doesn't have that heavy, oily, sunblocky feel to it.

  • I use Nutriganics products from the Body Shop. The tea tree scrub is very gentle, gets rid of the flakes without aggravating my skin (unlike the apricot stuff), and the moisturizer doesn't make me overly greasy.

I used to use St. Ives Apricot Scrub religiously and my dermatologist really yelled at me because it causes so much damage to your skin and just tears it. I used Mary Key Microderm now (only once a week) and it is amazing. I also use my Clarisonic morning and night.

  • I use L'oreal RevitaLift Anti-wrinkle cream.   I'm up in the mountains where it's really dry and I never have dry skin or flaking when I use this.

I also just wash my face with plain ole Ivory soap while in the shower.

  • Burts Bees. I have insanely sensitive skin and it's the only thing I have never developed a reaction to.

  • Philosophy Renewed Hope in a Jar is wonderful during the day!  I like the Garnier Ultra-Lift® Miracle Sleeping Cream Anti-Age + Anti-Fatigue Night Cream at night too.

  • I use Philosophy Hope in a Jar and Hope in a Jar Night. They're a bit on the pricier side, but you don't need a lot, so they do last a while. In addition to sensitive skin, I have an oily T-zone but dry elsewhere, and Philosophy products are the only ones that don't make me break out.

  • Coconut oil. I like cocovit.

Started using it on a healing 2nd degree burn, and would rub the extra on my face, best stuff I've used. I have combination skin, and lots of white flakies, and acne, and the acne has improved, and the white flakies are almost all gone!

so my mom's friend swears by coconut oil and she looks amazing.  I've always wanted to look into it.  I went on the page it reads:
**Cocovít Coconut Oil will liquify at over 76°F. This does not affect the oil quality.**

Have you had any problems with it?  I used to cook with coconut oil instead of olive, but it solidified once and never liquefied.  I got frustrated and went back to olive oil for cooking.  How is the cream for you?

  • I've used Clinique Acne Solutions Clearing Moisturizer for years. Keeps breakouts under control and I've never had an issue with dry skin as long as I use it regularly.
  • My favorite that i've been using since high school is L'Oreal Vitamin E lotion with spf 15 in the morning.  I use cleansers a couple times a week in the morning (in the shower), and use Merle Norman eye makeup remover and L'Oreal toner to take off my makeup at night.  I do not use lotion at night.
  • I also get white flakes in the winter. No moisturizer seems to ever work. I find that a combination of CeraVe moisturizing cleanser, followed by a witch hazel toner, and either coconut oil or a thick lotion containing hemp oil (like Hempz) is the only thing that makes my skin normal! I also have to exfoliate with either my Clarisonic or some sugar scrub.

No issues. I have some at my parents house and at mine (since I can't fly with it!) The jar at my house is always a solid (it melts in your hand/on your face immediately) the jar at my parents house is almost always a liquid because my Dad likes the house to be at 77 degrees...
My mom throws it in the fridge whenever I'm not there and it hardens, but it softens/liquefies again as soon as it's out. Works the same! I even use it to brush my teeth when I forget/run out of toothpaste...

I've cooked with liquid and solid coconut oil before-exactly the same (since the solid will melt in about 5 seconds haha) just use a spoon to get the oil out and voila! Nothing wrong with hardened coconut oil.

I use coconut oil on my face. It's the best moisturizer ever. It does take a while for it to seep in but it helps with wrinkles. I buy my jars from Trader Joes. I have eight jars floating around my house.
  • I use Pure Super Fruits Night balm and it seems to work well.  During the day I use Olay active hydrating which is okay.  I may try one of the PPs' suggestions, though, because I'd like to test out something new.  I may try Cerave face cream because I'm happy with the body lotions I've used.

As for exfoliating with St. Ive's or something else, isn't it okay as long as you don't do it too often?  I try to only wash my face with an exfoliating rinse once/week.

Slightly separately, I'd never done a mask before but last week I had some extra time and tried Origins clear improvement active charcoal mask.  I got it as a free sample with my last makeup purchase.  My skin felt amazingly soft for several days afterwards...will likely go for Origins products again.

St. Ives in particular is so rough that it tears your skin. Many dermatologists strongly advise against that specific kind of exfoliant.

As far as exfoliating in general, once a week is recommended because too often will dry your face out and do the opposite of what you're trying to accomplish.

  • Thanks, @emmaaa ; this is very helpful
  • I LOVE Soothe from Rodan + Fields. I get bad eczema all over the place and it calms it right down. I use even in between flareups to keep things under control. its amazing and gentle.
  • @canya520- are you selling Rodan + Fields? All three of your posts are about how great the company is. Please know that vendors are not allowed to post here.
