With Prudie's response

Dear Prudence,
I have a smart and beautiful 10-year-old niece who has a mustache growing on either side of her top lip. I know how cruel kids can be and have never asked if she has been teased but I think she might be old enough to get the offending hair waxed off. If I offer to pay for it am I sending her the message that she should be ashamed of it?

—Would-Be Hairy Godmother

Yes.

Re: With Prudie's response

  • Yes she would be offended. If it doesn't seem to bother her, leave it be.
  • I've had a bit of a mustache for years and it wasn't until recently that I finally did something about it because it bothered me enough.  If my Mom, let alone an aunt, had brought it up it would have seriously crushed my self-esteem.  Granted, I tend to already be a very sensitive person lolz, but if she gets to the point where it bothers her enough she'll start looking for ways to do something about it. :)
