What questions should I ask a salon/stylist when I call to inquire about hair/make-up trials or bookings for engagement photos/wedding day? I don't even know where to start.
I would start by telling them what you want for yourself (ie. airbrush makeup and updo, non-airbrush makeup and long curls, etc...) then also include if you want to also have hair and makeup done for the bridal party, flower girls, moms, etc... Depending on if you are paying or if you are just offering it to your bridal party you may have the exact number or you might just have a rough estimate but that will help them be able to get you an estimate on the cost. (Note if you are requiring your bridal party to get their hair and makeup done you must pay. If you don't want to pay you can't require it and you would approach it by saying something like "please let me know if you'd like to get your hair and/or makeup done each one costs $65")
Do you want them to be able to do both hair and makeup or are you ok with separate places? If they don't do both they might have recommendations of people they've worked with before to do the other.
Then is it important to you that they travel to you or are you fine going to the salon? See if they will travel (most will) and what the cost will be for travel.
Find out how long they expect it to take. If you have a large bridal party then see if they can add more stylists to cut down on time.
Find out the price of trials and don't be surprised if it is the same or close to the same as day of. My trials actually took longer than my hair and makeup day of because they were trying different things to see what I liked and learning about my skin type and hair type so you are taking up time that they could have had with a client and they are using product on you. You should plan on tipping for the trial and day of just as you would any other service you receive.
