I just saw pictures of someone's 16th party. She had a long ball gown and she has some 12 or so friends all dressed in the same white knee length dress.

Is it really a thing that sweet 16er's have a party of friends that they dress in the same dress?

Do you have "I didn't know it was a thing" stories?

I recently explained tbe concept of a tiered reception to some friends and they were horrified that people actually did that. They had never heard of it.

@LyndaUSVI, was this a quincenarea? I've seen that the "attendants" dress up as extravagantly as the honoree.

I heard that a new "thing" is to have a "sip and see" after a baby is born. Apparently, a friend hosts this so that family and friends can come and see the baby and sip on wine. My first thought was also "is this a thing"?

At least in the old days in the South, a girl's 16th birthday was a big deal. I never heard of anyone wearing matching dresses, but the white dress was traditional.
I moved back north just before my 16th birthday, so I didn't have a celebration.

Now, instead of slapping a sticker on your baby for every "month birthday" you can slap on a sticker for development milestones. I saw a mom post "I turned over!" and "I can sit up!" before unfollowing her on Facebook.
File that under the "I don't give a shit" folder.

I know some one who does that. Likes including "keeping mom and dad up all night". The kid is 2 months old.

When my nephew turned over, my dad posted a video. My sister didn't.

I actually think the month pics are cute, especially if it's done with a stuffed animal or something next to the baby so you can get a better perspective of how much he/she has grown.

We actually gave daughter a new laptop so she can SKYPE with us. Simon broke hers, and replacing it wasn't in their budget. It was old, anyway.
Gotta have those SKYPEs for Christmas! I can't believe how cheap laptops are now!

Nope. I was thinking similar to @holyguacamole79 that maybe a quincenera, or similar to @cmgragain a debutante ball thing. But I've never seen a 16th bash other than those.

At a party recently, some friends were talking about a girl I didn't know and how she got a bikini wax a few days before her due date so it would look ok for the doctors. I definitely had a "people do that?!" moment. F that nonsense, I don't give a crap what the doctor sees or thinks of my parts.

I went to a birthday party like that about 20 years ago. My Portuguese neighbor had a super sweet 16. It was in a hall, she wore a gown and her attendants had matching dresses and they had food that rivaled my wedding. Like - full on Venetian table / raw bar cocktails and tons of dancing. Unfortunately as much as I love to dance, I had to have my late cousin's (then) wife show me WTH I was supposed to do. It was a ton of fun though and seemed to be very in keeping for their culture.

We took DD on the local Polar Express train. I live 15 minutes from a place with functioning steam trains and they do a great job. They encourage the kids to wear their PJs. On our train was an entire family wearing matching jammies. Including the parents. They had Christmas light necklaces on. I didn't know it was a thing and now I can't unsee it.

I had ovarian surgery last year. After the procedure, I realized they shaved EVERYTHING. Don't worry about waxing.

I think for me it's been the overwhelming amount of "First Married ________" posts I've seen on Facebook lately. (i.e. selfies with captions like "first married trip to the mall!", "first married Thanksgiving!", "first married church attendance!" etc. etc.)

I mean honestly. Being a newlywed is great and fun and all that, but I do NOT understand the need to call attention to everything you do for the first time as a married couple.

DH and I have definitely had our little moments over different "firsts", but there was no Facebook post announcing it.

FWIW, this isn't the case for everyone giving birth.

BUT (TMI alert) I tore in childbirth both times. I had more stitches for baby #1 than 2 but I needed them. It was just easier IMO to clean up down there as much as I could before my due date. I didn't go all out and get waxed but I wasn't going to have my first Brazilian to occur when that area was sensitive and I looked like I was smuggling a basketball.

Wait, WHY? I had laparoscopic surgery a couple of months ago to remove one of my fallopian tubes, and I have had surgery to remove an ovarian cyst as well. Neither time did they shave any part of me, let alone the entire area... That seems like overkill!

No clue. My procedure was also done via lap (DaVinci robot assisted). I was positioned in the stirrups for the whole procedure, so I don't know if that made a difference?

I was so hopped up on painkillers that I didn't notice until the next day. I was like "oh, hello there."

Interesting. I know when my sister had surgery years back to remove an ovarian cyst, they had to shave about 2" down because the incisions were very low on her pelvis. But for my surgeries both times, they went through my belly button and two small incisions about 3" below my belly button - no shaving required. I am guessing if they had you in stirrups maybe they were using a transvaginal ultrasound too or something, so they wanted a clean slate.

Back on topic: Are upside-down Christmas trees really a thing? I thought some random famous person just did it for kicks one time, but I am seeing them on my Facebook timeline now... Like, actual people I know are doing it. WHY is this a thing? It makes zero sense to me.

To me this is almost an argument for waxing!! I've gotten bikini waxes. I've also shaved the whole thing. I will never shave the whole area again. Itchy and red bumps and everything growing back in. If I knew I was going to be shaved during surgery, I think I'd go get a full wax beforehand, and I never want to or plan to get a Brazilian.

That would make sense.

Either that, or they wanted to haze some poor nurse.
