DC Marriage License Qs

A few questions for anyone that knows
1.  Do the bride/groom to be need to be present to apply for the marriage license?
2.  Does the license expire within any timeframe?  We're getting married May 1 2010 - Can we apply/get anytime and will it still be valid (can we get in March)
Thanks for any heads up!

Congrats!  I am getting married on the same day so best of luck to you!  Can you believe it's less than four months away now?  Ok, barely less than ... but still :)

You do need to be present and apply in person.  Also, if either one of you is divorced, you have to bring proof (divorce decree, etc).

Here's some information I found out but I'd definitely Google it and see what you come up with.  Are you getting married in DC or in MD or VA?  They do differ a bit.

    Good luck!!

Yeah - I found all that stuff.  We're mostly concerned with how LONG the license once we get it is valid for (wedding is in DC).

thanks and best wishes to you Lil2010

The DC license doesn't expire (I'm not sure about VA or MD, since we're getting married in Georgetown.)

There is a waiting period though. You get the license three days (not including holidays or weekends) after you apply. You can get married immediately after getting the actual license.

No blood test is needed anymore and the cost is $45, and they only take cash!

    Hope that's helpful!

thanks. We're getting married in Georgetown too

Can anyone pick up the license- or does it have to be one of the people applying?  We're headed into town in March and thought we'd apply but might not be back for awhile.  Fiancee's parents live in the area though and could pick it up after the 3 days...

This was all I could find online - I think as long as they have the receipt they should be able to pick it up. You might want to call and ask just to be sure.

**By law, three full days must pass between the day of application to the day that the license can be issued. The fee payment receipt is required to pick up the license. Marriage licenses are not issued by mail.**

Here's the link to DC courts. You need the receipt to pick up the license. http://www.dccourts.gov/dccourts/superior/family/marriage.jsp
