Miss Universe

Please tell me someone else saw this??  They announced the runner up (Colombia) as winner, then changed it to the correct winner (Phillipines).  On live tv.  It was horrific if you ask me.  How do you screw that up.  I feel pretty bad for Colombia.

Re: Miss Universe

  • I just happened to switch to that channel (not realizing the pageant was on) and saw stunned looks and then heard Steve Harvey's explanation. We were so confused since we missed the original wrong announcement. I can't figure out how you mess that up? Or I guess if his card just has the winner and he's supposed to ad-lib the runner up and he just goofed?
  • This was in my Skimm email this morning.. SO awful! Steve Harvey obviously feels awful, but i agree with @kvruns, how do you mess that up?! I'm not really big on pageants but I still feel bad for both of them - Colombia because she obviously thought she won, and then Philippines because that's such a horrible way to win, plus I'm sure everyone was trying to console Colombia.

I had no idea the pageant was on until I started seeing stuff about Steve Harvey on FB last night.

I thought this was classy, though (from Miss Universe official FB page)

A message from Miss Universe Colombia.

  • I feel so bad for everyone involved. The women there work hard to get that title and neither of them could have felt great in that moment. I saw the card Steve Harvey read off of and it was 100% clear as day, full sentences no ad-libs and the winner was in larger text than the other two. Still, a human mistake to make.

  • We watched about 2 minutes of the pageant before we had to change it... Listening to Miss America talk about gun control (which she clearly knew very little about) was painful and cringeworthy. Plus, I find Steve Harvey to be INCREDIBLY annoying.

I did hear about the mix-up this morning though, and it sounds like it was completely Steve Harvey's fault. And when he apologized on Twitter, he misspelled both Colombia (Columbia) and Philippines (Phillipians). He should not be allowed on TV.

I hope they didn't pay him. Yes, people make mistakes...BUT you had one job, Steve. One job!

I feel guilty, but I laughed so hard when I watched it online today, bc agreed forgot it even existed. Glad the Donald no longer owns it, otherwise I could not care less.

  • Don't get me wrong, Harvey royally screwed up.  He had no excuse.

However, I respect him for owning up to it promptly and not trying to blame anyone else.  I think that showed class.
  • I really dislike pageants.  Why is it apparently some "unwritten rule" that you can't be one of the most beautiful women in the world unless you're 5'9" or taller?

But I digress.  I still absolutely cringed for both of those ladies when I heard about it the next day...especially the won who lost and literally had to have the crown taken back off her head.  I might side eye pageants, but I know it is a lot of hard work, time, and money to be in the pageant circuit and I can't imagine how devastating that was.

Alan Thicke messed it up even worse back in 2006.

Totally cringe at both of these.  I can't imagine how much that sucks.

On another note, I definitely consider myself a feminist, but for some reason pageants don't get me all fired up like my feminist friends.  Not sure why.  I don't watch them (just not interested), but I'm not morally outraged by them.  I guess I feel like the problem of female objectification is WAY beyond pageants. Pageants are the least offensive compared to some of the other ways women are objectified in this world...

To be honest, if the whole winner announcement mistake hadn't happened, I think many people (myself included) wouldn't have even known that Miss Universe was on last night/still existed.
Which is precisely why I think so many people are suggesting this "mistake" is a publicity stunt. What do you guys think?

Actually, he didn't mess it up. He read the correct names. The former Mrs world put the sash and crown on the wrong person.

It would suck putting all that work in and having this happen. At the same time, once miss USA/universe dropped the talent portion, I couldn't even convince myself it was anything more than a Victoria secret fashion show.

  • Everybody makes mistakes. Yes, this was a huge slip-up, but that's the risk of live television. I certainly feel for the contestants (hawkward), but I think Steve Harvey handled the recovery as best he could, and the contestants handled the situation gracefully. Unfortunately, in Harvey's Twitter apology, he misspelled Philippines AND Colombia, which is even more hawkward. That kind of added insult to injury.

  • apparently Harvey read it off the teleprompter instead of the card and it was written wrong on there. I didn't watch the pageant and found out the next day, poor Miss Philippines I am sure felt horrible by the looks of it.

  • I heard Miss Columbia is suing Steve Harvey for distress.

    Really?

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Unpopular opinion;   I can't stand pageants.
Just another reason I like you.  I detest pageants and have been known to go a bit out to lunch trying to explain that to people.

Whaaa? I also heard that she's been offered $1 million to do porn.

  • I also didn't know Miss Universe was on until I heard about the mix up the next day.

I'm with you short+sassy. And I love John Oliver!

I'm not against the idea of a scholarship pageant. What I dislike is that there are so many more demonstrations of the women's outward appearance (evening wear, swim suit, plus all the other times they stand around on the stage looking pretty) vs. any sort of talent. Why not have the admission criteria include GPA, or published academic works, conference presentations, or volunteer events?

Sure, physical fitness and health are important. But why do they parade around in swim suits (just because one is thin, does not mean one is healthy)? Why not have them show how much they can lift in a squat rack?
  • I really cringed for both ladies. So upsetting!

As a former pageant girl (and fierce feminist - you can be both at the same time!), I can empathise with how they both felt. I think both handled it with grace and dignity, especially Miss Colombia.
  • Sorry I posted and ditched ladies.  I haven't been able to log in for the past 2 weeks almost.  We were just flipping channels while packing and caught the ending.  I heard he's had his contract renewed, so owning up must have worked out for him
