we will be spending a good chunk in this area around 3000 to 4000.00 who is the best photographer in Chicago?

    My vote would be for Matushek Photography.  Peter and Jessica are an awesome couple and they do amazing work.

    When my son married in 2012, the Matushek's were virtually unknown at the time.  My son got a GREAT deal for their engagement and wedding photos.  Their work, and reputation, spread like wildfire!  I'm sorry you weren't able to use them. 

    A friend used Mike Scarpelli who is with Gerber and Scarpelli Photography.  The pictures are excellent.  I am guessing they are expensive but might be worth a look.  (I say "expensive" with unknown bias; this bride did everything uber high end.)

    Since photographers have different styles, what is great to me might not be great for you and vice versa. Try googling Chicago wedding photos and look at the image results. Pick out photos you love, find out who the photog is, check their prices and availability, check their Yelp and BBB records. There are just tons of photogs to choose from so I'd start with finding the right aesthetic in a portfolio.
    Also, find out who friends and family have used, if you like their photos.
