Weight Watchers

My coworkers and I (plus our spouses) have decided to do Weight Watchers. I did it once years ago and (clearly) need to do it again.

Does anyone have any favorite recipes? Tips? Snacks?

Re: Weight Watchers

  • I track things before I eat them. If I know what I'm having for dinner, I track it in the morning so I know what I can have in between.

Recipes? I love the buffalo blue cheese chicken burgers, the sesame noodles (with chicken thighs and I add mushrooms & snow peas), the spinach pesto. Hmmmm...I might think of more.

  • I made a really good lemon chicken with broccoli recipe that I found on the website. I also liked to make stir fry and just leave off the rice to save some points.

  • www.skinnytaste.com is what I gotta say about WW.  She has awesome recipes with the points already calculated for you.

  • I also track recipes before I eat them or make them. Some things turn out to be a ridiculous number of points and it's just easier to plan for something that will "cost" me less. Also second SkinnyTaste! Her recipes are awesome and delicious and WW friendly.

I really like their new system. You have daily fitness goals, and they've changed up their points allocations so you can generally assume that a meal of a protein and vegetables is going to be alright pointswise versus something with starchs, carbs, etc. I just started it up again last month after a 2 year hiatus so I'm hoping for some success.

  • In addition to skinnytaste.com, I like Emilybites.com. She also lists points.

I don't follow WW, but love both those sites for recipes and they do.
  • I tried WW years ago and gained weight :(  I ran a lot and also did exercise classes and had a shitton of extra activity points and I never found a good balance between eating enough for my exercise and following the points because I'd end most days with a bunch of leftover points.
  • Thank you all for the recommendations! I love skinnytaste already but need to check out Emilybites. All of the recipe recommendations have me searching too!

As for gaining weight on WW, I think it's about finding balance. Last time I did it, I had my best success if I ate only about 1/2 of my activity points. If I ate them all, I gained weight. If I was exercising a lot but not eating enough points, I seemed to stop losing weight. It was a balance.

  • I don't do WW (but I do think it's effective because it's based on calories) but eating back 1/2 (or fewer) of your exercise calories/points is definitely the best way to go. People, apparently including WW, vastly overestimate the # of calories burned during moderate physical activity. You can wipe out your entire 45 min workout in 30 seconds with a quest bar and half a sports drink!  :s

I came here to recommend Emilybites.com! I just had her Pumpkin Apple Bacon soup (only 5 smart points!) and it is super filling and delicious. The pork cacciatore on the WW site is one of FI's absolute favorites.

I definitely agree with not eating back all of your exercise points. And if you're a peanut butter fiend like me, PB2 will save your life.

I always roll my eyes when I see someone post on fb about a workout and saying wow I burned 1000 calories (because the machine said they did) and I think hmmm you burn 100-125 per running mile depending on body type/efficiency, speed, etc, so no I don't think you magically burned 250 each mile because you're that special
  • Oh, I like Weight Watchers! I lost about 15 pounds a few years back and was pretty happy with it. My mom has been working there for about 30 years now!

I love their chocolate smoothies :)

I use a heart rate monitor that tracks calories burned for me.  I find it to be more accurate than the machines.

  • One of my coworkers recently became nearly unrecognizable in a photo from having lost 40 lbs on WW since March.  Her quick success was shocking.  It's actually inspired some of our other coworkers to join.  No favorite recipes but I pin the shit out of Skinnytaste on Pinterest.  Also "Nutrition Twins".  GL!
  • Number one: Good luck but if you put in the work you won't need it!

    Number two: Love Weight Watchers.

Number three: Chicken stock, the real thing. You will be amazed at how cheap it is to make yourself, how low fat and low calorie you can make it. How many incredibly tasty and low calorie things you can do with it. Chicken leg quarters -- 50 cents at pound! 1 leg quarter per qt in the crockpot for 10-24 hours on high. The longer the better. Refrigerate then skim the fat off (easy but you have to get the hang of it). Season, add vegetables and chicken and you have a dream.

    Number four: cardio!

All the best to you and your group!

I know that rat bastard machine is lying to me, but it's my fantasy and I am sticking to it. I have GOT to get back to WW. I did what many good military retirees do. Gain 40 pounds. In just under 3 years. I hate myself for that because I said I would never be one of "those" who let that happen. I am far more humble and far less judgmental about that now. The problem is I work back at the HQ as a civilian now and many of my peers who are still in uniform are surely thinking about me what I used to think about those who retired before me and gained weight. I think the week of the 18th is a good time to get back. I am taking my heavy self to Great Wolf Lodge the weekend before so I can parade around in my bathing suit. I also think I may need an accountability partner for this. I have had success with WW, I just kept falling off the wagon and saying I can do this myself. I only really ate my activity points if we were doing something on weekends like a wedding. Activity points are good for wedding cake.
