Poll: tipping

This has probably been polled before, but not while I was here.  Anyway:

Do you tip when picking up your own take-out food?

Re: Poll: tipping

  • Yes.  A buck or two.

Although, I can't remember the last time I even got take-out.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Usually a buck or the change.  It depends on how I was treated and promptly helped (based on how busy they are).  I worked take out for a few years at a restaurant, so that could be a contributing factor as to why.

  • I do. Usually not much- probably $1 or $2. It kinda depends on the service I received.

  • I don't, though maybe I should? What exactly are you tipping someone for in that scenario?

The only times I do are when 1) I pay in cash and want to get rid of the change (very rare) or 2) it's a large order (think more than two people) that would take a minute for someone to pack up for me. When I'm just getting a pint of fried rice from some Chinese place it has just never occurred to me tip.

I will if it's more of a sit down place, because it's usually a member of the waitstaff who has to put the meal together in the boxes etc.  I'll do a couple bucks. But if it's a casual place that does a lot of take out orders and/or doesn't have regular waitstaff (ie you order at the counter anyway), then not really, unless I have some change, I'll leave that in a tip jar.

I guess the reason I started doing it was because my brother was a server for a long time. He told me at one point that it was a really nice gesture for someone to tip on a to go order, so I decided I would start tipping a little. I never had before then. Once he started serving I knew about all of the crap he had to deal with during his shifts (i.e. large parties leaving very small tips or no tips at all, etc.) so it made me a little more motivated.

  • No, I do not.  If I get something delivered?  Yes.  But if I am driving somewhere and picking it up myself, then no.

I guess this is an important distinction to make- I rarely get to-go orders from places that have servers, so would this advice still apply?  Like whenever I get to-go food it is a place you just order at the counter and they prepare your food (Chinese, Subway, Chipotle-type places). Do you tip then?

That's good to know though! I was also a server for a while but I worked at a place with a dedicated to-go order person so that never really crossed my mind.
  • I always do - not necessarily 20% but always something. I worked at the take out counter of a well known chain restaurant (sit down) in high school and was only paid server minimum wage and we relied on tips so it was always my first instinct to tip others. I know most take out places don't work like that but I also know their jobs are not always as simple as taking your payment and handing over a bag of food. We were responsible for preparing sides, packaging, labeling, etc. Certainly less service than a server at your table but still some.
  • Yes, usually a couple dollars. Especially if it's somewhere I go on a regular basis.

  • @themosthappy91 good point! I don't really tip if it's something where you go up to the counter and order like Chinese, Subway, etc. I should have clarified that too!

  • No, I don't.

  • Usually a dollar or so...not a lot.

  • No, I don't. But I don't order take out from sit down places that don't have a dedicated To Go section that is separate from their sit down service. So I still walk in and order from a counter, they make my food, and then I leave.
  • Usually not, unless it's a particularly large or difficult order.

  • Not normally, the only time I usually do is if there's a tip jar. But I'm also lazy so if I'm ordering food I'm ordering from seamless and not leaving my apartment ;) (but I always tip my delivery person!)

  • Yes, not as much as when I sit down but someone still had to take the time to cook, package it and ring me out and the wait staff will still get taxed on a tip for that order.

  • no, the only take-out food I get would be picking up a pizza or a place where they make it there while I'm standing (Qdoba/Chipotle, subs or something similar). I've never gotten to-go food from a sit down restaurant
  • I don't. I guess I consider to-go orders like ordering at a place with a counter. Usually when we do takeout it is one of those places anyways but a couple of times it hasn't been and I didn't. For delivery I always tip the driver but now we moved to a place that has no pizza places that deliver so we have to pick it up and I don't tip.

    Same here.

  • Nope.  But we order pizza online and drive to pick it up, so there hasn't been much done on the part of the shop.  Actually, if we call, they don't even answer.  It's a national call centre type place.  Plus, there's no tip jar and no option on the pin pad, so I think it'd be a little awkward.

  • If I order takeout and go pick it up, I tip a couple dollars. If it's a counter service restaurant where I am just ordering my food and taking it to go, I don't.
  • No. I strongly believe in tipping servers well, I required this trait in all of my boyfriends, and I once tipped 100% at an expensive restaurant because the service was extraordinary. The only reason I bring that up is to show I'm not a stingy tipper. But I am not being "served" when I pick up food to go, just handed a bag of food, like my cashier hands me my bagged-up groceries.

  • We never really order out, but I think it really depends on the place. If it's something like Chipotle or McDonalds, no; a sit-down restaurant, maybe depending on the service I received.

When I worked in a restaurant as a hostess, it was always nice to receive tips but definitely not expected. I worked by myself during the week, and one night it was extremely busy and a guy placed an order of over $450 (I already had 6 other carry outs waiting). He asked for extra cocktail sauce when I brought his $1.05 change back; after I came back with the cocktail sauce he handed me a penny and was like "hey, I left you a tip; don't spend it all in one place." I still laugh about it when I think about it, and the penny is now used for jokes around the firehouse.

  • No, never. Tipping is when servers actually have to, you know, serve you and remember to come back and check on you and bring you extra drinks and clear away dishes.

The coffee shop that H likes (which is a drive-thru hut) puts the lines on the bottom for suggested 10, 15, and 20 percent tips. It really annoys me, although H doesn't tip, because they are hinting that people should tip even though they are doing absolutely nothing to deserve a tip.

For the record, I always tip at least 20 percent at sit-down restaurants. However, I do believe that everyone should make minimum wage and tips should not be the rule but rather the exception for truly over-the-top, fantastic service.
