Red hair help!

So I colored my hair red back in August/September. This was before we set an official date, April 23rd. I love my hair red but not for the wedding. I'm going to have my hair colored closer to the wedding. I was just wondering if anybody had any tips on getting the red to fade as much as possible between now and then because I want to go to a dirty blonde color with blonde highlights and I don't want orange hair. Thank you!

I've gone from red to platinum blond before. It killed my hair, but I did do it myself; it may be different if you are doing it in a salon.

To get it to fade, mine always bleaches out in the sun. But I'm a natural blond, so it did get lighter in the summer. As it is winter (not sure where you are), sun might not be so easy for you. Washing it more will help fade. Also, don't re-dye it red.
  • Huh, funny- I put MORE red in my hair for my wedding.  I love it.

My red fades from washing with "harsher" shampoos- i.e.- clarifying shampoos, those with sulfates, etc.  Also- heat helps fade- hairdryers, flat irons, etc.  And sun- if you can get out in the sun a couple of times, that helps, too.
  • Thanks guys! My hair has definitely faded a lot. The water only stopped coming out pink in the last month so with another 2-3ish months it should be fairly faded. And I wish I could see the sun more! Haha I'll try a "harsher shampoo".
  • I loved my red hair but I gave it up because I hated how quickly it faded. I didn't use harsh shampoo but it definitely faded a bit after each wash. Before using harsher shampoo's I'd consider just washing it more frequently but still condition to keep your hair healthy. Also when I gave up on red and wanted to go back to blonde rather that bleaching my whole head my hairdresser gave me very heavy blonde highlights. I loved that look, You could still see a bit of the faded red but it honestly complemented the blonde in a really great way. Good luck.

I hated how much it faded. I got bored of the blond after a while and went back red. I went with a darker red that starts off as a blackish-red then fades to a dark red. I like it more because while it still fades, it fades red rather than an odd brownish color.
  • I strongly recommend against do anything that will stress your hair out more than coloring it alone. Are you getting it done professionally? I'd suggest going in now/soon and talk to them about transitioning it to the color you want. Good hair stylists will be able to give you an idea of what your hair can handle. They may be able to take it to the color you want immediately, or have a plan to transition it (take it lighter this time, tone out the red next time, vice versa, etc), or at least give you tips on fading it without damaging it.

  • I would definitely go to a salon and seek their advice.  They can help you transition the color out, and you want to be careful with "harsh" products because they can stress out your hair.  And, FWIW, the last time I used a harsh shampoo to try and get some red out, my hair turned pink.  Bright pink.  Which was awesome, but unexpected.

  • I honestly didn't even think about seeing a stylist ahead of time lol. I am going to have it done by sister, who's going to cosmetology school. I trust her even though she won't be fully done because for the longest time she used to help me color my hair so I know with a little schooling with actual products like toner and developer she'll be great. Thanks!!

Your sister is probably great for normal dye jobs, and hair cuts but you'll likely have to have the color stripped, then the blonde added on. This needs to be done by an experienced color specialist. If you're concerned with what your hair will look like on your wedding day find a professional who has experience in this. Keep in mind, this trend of rainbow hair is fairly new and as such even experienced stylists may not be qualified or trained in this process. Your sister will understand.

Definitely seek a professional. I had to have color stripped out of my hair once and it made my hair rather unpleasant to touch and brush and required a lot of deep conditioning. If you really want your sister to do it maybe see if her teacher will supervise her while she's doing it and she can also give you tips on how to treat your hair after.

That's a great idea! I have recently went back to my natural dark almost black brown b/c I needed some color in my hair, all the bleach was making my already thin hair thinner :( But I'm hoping for a change soon so maybe I'll try blonde for a bit and then try the dark red because of all the hair colors i've had i think red was my favorite!

I had bright red hair http://hairstylezz.com/best-bright-red-hair-color-ideas/ this winter and wanted to have blonde hair, just for a change . I now have softer red hair but with brown and blond tone in it, not really what I wanted at first. So, if you really want them to be blonde, maybe I would sugest you to go to a salon and to bleach them or something like this even if it's not good for your hair.

This post was from January. The OP got married 6 months ago. Please watch the dates on the posts because it's considered rude to comment on posts that are more than 2 months old.
  • There is a product that lifts colour from your hair. It is expensive and I can guarantee that your sister doesn't know how to use it. It takes a couple of hours and is not a strip. You will need to put colour on top of it, but it will lift all the residual colour out. It's expensive because the person who does it needs to know what they are doing.
