Help - Looking for a tablet for gaming and more for a 10-12 year old

If you bought one do you have parental control which I would want and what do you recommend for a child this age and what is the service you have on it

  • What kind of games, first of all? There aren't a whole lot of games you can play on tablets besides apps. And you can just play those games on a phone, if the kid has one.

No phones right now. Google play downloads for now when using someone elses or some tablets may have apps already on the device. Not to familiar with them and that's why I'm asking

  • I have an iPad.  You can easily put parental restrictions on the device.  He can play any apps that can be downloaded from the app store (of course with your permission aka password).  We have our ipad connected to our wifi but we do not have a data plan for it, meaning we cannot use the internet or any other app that requires data when it is not connected to a wifi account.

  • Oh okay, I figured I'd ask about the phones. So many kids have one these days, I had to be sure. For Google Play apps, I'd suggest a Samsung tablet. I had one and it was great.

  • I second the iPad or iPad mini. I don't have one, but my cousin has kids and she lets her kids play with one. Its easy to put parental control settings on those, and there are also plenty of game options.

  • If you are not wanting to spend hundreds of dollars on an iPad, I would suggest a Fire Tablet. They have built-in parental controls that are really easy to turn on and adjust based on the kid's age (like, you can control what kind of content he/she views, buys, downloads, etc.). H and I both have Fires - mins is pretty old, his is new - and we love them.

You can't download apps from Google Play, I don't think, but Amazon has their own app store with a ton of games. Plus, if you have Amazon Prime, you get free streaming TV/movies and music.

This one is also really good! My mom has had 2 and loves them.

  • My parents' neighbors have triplet boys who all received a Kindle Fire for Christmas. They LOVE the parental controls and they have them all synched to the same Amazon Prime account so whenever the boys try to buy a game/book/whatever one of the parents has to approve the purchase first.

  • I don't know all the specifics but H got one of these for Christmas. It's a tablet specifically geared towards gaming. Does all the things iPads and Samsungs do but you can stream games from the computer or onto your TV if it's Android based.  Also has a gaming controller which is extra but the tablet itself is roughly $200 cheaper than the more famous brands.

  • We have a Samsung Galaxy tablet that we use for games. We download things from the Google Play store and from Amazon's App Store. Works great for games and we have a lot of free ones from both app stores.
