Wedding Woes

One of the firstiest FWPs

We tried a free trial of Blue Apron and then I didn't cancel the account and kept pushing the orders off, until I forgot and then we got an order.  Blue Apron is expensive ($69 for two 4 person meals...which IS cheaper than eating out, but a little more than half of what I budget for weekly groceries).

However, my kids and DH have devoured all the dishes I've made from Blue Apron.  And yes, I could look up recipes and buy all the shit from the store.  But Blue Apron makes it so damn convenient by sending everything you need and providing directions in a 'cooking for dummies' format.

I've canceled my account, but now I'm thinking about reactivating it.  But them I'm like, "It's $70, that's stupid."  But the meals are so good and seeing my family eat it all up and want more makes me happy.

  • I'm a convenience shopper too. Premade salads, yep. How hard is it to make your own salad, yo?

  • H and I have an ongoing argument about whether BA is "worth it." He loves to cook, is a great cook, and can put together really good meals for much less money. BUT, he works crazy hours and only really gets to cook on weekends.

For me, BA is a restaurant replacement. I can cook one of their meals in about as much time as it takes to either go somewhere or wait for delivery. And since I'm not a particularly confident cook, having all the instructions spelled out with pictures and the ingredients pre-measured is hugely helpful to me. I also like that it gives you only what you need. I hate having to get a huge amount of some obscure ingredient and then find ways to keep using it before it goes bad.

They do publish all of their recipes on their blog. So you could try making the meals but doing the shopping yourself. That didn't work for me, because I hate grocery shopping more than I hate cooking.
  • Do it. H and I love getting our meals every week. We're not a fan of Blue Apron but we do like Hello Fresh and Home Chef. We don't get them every week (too expensive) but we try to get them at least once or twice a month. I think I have referrals codes if anyone wants to try.
  • Exactly, @TheDuckis.  The pre-measuring and everything is so nice.  Also, it gets my kids to try things that they may not normally try and I'm able to cook something that's different than our normal staples.  It's a lot of effort to think outside the box when cooking, but my family appreciates it when I do.

I really think that the kiddo was going to go nuclear at one point if we had baked chicken one.more.time (in his defense, we did get into a rut).  He talks about boycotting chicken when he moves out of the house one day.
  • I'm definitely interested for the convenience factor. No shopping, no leftover ingredients to rot in my fridge, no planning. I'm a dunce at cooking so would really appreciate the instructions.
But... it IS expensive. DH and I probably spend $60-$70 a week on groceries, with maybe one dinner at a restaurant a week. So it would definitely take a toll on budget but could be worth it if it gives me cooking practice and cooking confidence.

  • I'm on the fence about it. Sometimes the meals are just so damn weird and then I'm left with everyone looking at me like "Why the fuck did you make us eat that?" but sometimes there are hidden gems.

I am a little peeved because with my last order they forgot some items. I had them at home so it was no problem but man, get some quality control.
  • I like to cook when I have time. I've make some of the BA recipes from online - never subscribed to the service. My one complaint is that while the food I have made was decent (I ended up modifying it to add more flavor/seasoning), but also crazy time consuming.

I usually end up getting on a kick/having a craving for something, and going from there to make it. Randomly i'll be all .. "i've never actually made roast beef, but little roast beef sliders with horseradish would be really good right now" to ending up in the grocery store with a cart full of ingredients.
  • I am currently running on all 3 programs. Every month I automatically Skip all the deliveries and choose only the weeks that sound good to me. Most of the foods are recipes I wouldn't think of out of the blue, and it makes H want to cook with me. I will say I prefer Home Chef, because they have the most flexibility and choices.
