Listen to this story (or read it)

Long story short, one of my coworkers is getting married Saturday and of course we always talk wedding because our weddings are so close.  Well, Tuesday I mentioned having to go get our marriage license, and she was like, "what?"  I feel so bad, she worked on getting it yesterday but it didn't work out.   She and her FI are Bosnian and they needed their birth certificates translated by today.  They couldn't find anyone to do it in time.   They're still having their ceremony Saturday, but I guess they won't be legally married until they get back from their honeymoon.  :(  I really don't know how I would feel about that...

Awww!  I feel so bad!  I have nightmares about something weird happening for us.  Which reminds me, must check that FI has his birth certificate at our apartment...

That was my first thought, but I'm wondering if it has something to do with her being from a different country.  Maybe they do it differently in Bosnia?  In any case it SUCKS!

ok I may have stretched the truth a bit with that statement... but seriously... who did not read the OP and immediately think "DUH"... granted I do feel sorry for the girl and all (because she's got to be freaking out right about now).... but come on... really.... reeealllly??   If you didn't think it, you are some kind of saint.

I just so happen to be the type of person that has no problem actually saying what many people are thinking.  Sometimes I try to put it nicely... others my knee-jerk reaction gets the best of me.  I am that friend who will tell you if a pair of pants make you look fat or your hair looks ridiculous or your new bf is a turd nugget.  Hate me.

Back to the OP--- could you imagine how ugly it would have been had you not mentioned anything?  Yikes!!!  I wonder who her officiant is.... and how that has not come up in conversation yet.  I am pretty sure that our priest mentioned it a few times (who signs it, where to leave it, when he needs it, how we get it back) before the wedding day.  Actually, come to think of it... we left it with him 2 weeks before the wedding b/c I was nervous we would forget it.  Oh man... she is so lucky that you said something about it.  It doesn't change her situation, but it at least gave her a "head's up" instead of being mortified at the ceremony.

No. I refuse to hate you. People who would rather me lie to them typically arent my friends. If you dont want the truth then youre also too scared to give the truth. I appreciate friends like you Mon!

    oh for pete's sake.....

In an effort to be more nice, I have prepared the following statement.  Please disregard my original "duh" response to the op and refer to the statement below for my newfound sensitive feelings on the subject:

"ZOMG... the poor poor thing!!!  I bet she spent months researching every detail of getting wedding-ed.  The dress, the venue, the shoes, a photographer, a dj.  She must have totally forgotten about the getting married part.  I can totally see how that could happen.  What a shame.  But it's totally not her fault, you know.  I mean... surely someone else must be to blame.  Granted, she is old enough and mature enough to be getting married... but she should never be held responsible for understanding the legality of marriage and the necessary requirements.  That must be someone's else's job.  I totally feel so so sorry for her.  And can't believe such a terrible misunderstanding has occurred."

    Better?

Might I point out that I am not the only one (op and Kara) who had the same initial reaction (and had the cayones to write it... although I'm certain many more thought it too)

Anywho.... in truth I do feel sorry for her predicament, but I just can't fathom not knowing there was some sort of legal paperwork involved.  Especially being from another country and, likely, having dealt with the nightmare of visas, passports, immigration, licenses, etc... she shouold be a seasoned vet w/ all the nonsensical government paperwork.  And, if nothing else, like I said above... I can't believe it was never mentioned by the officiant.
