Pot and pregnancy

Dear Prudence,
When my mother was pregnant with me, she smoked a lot of pot. I came out fine. No health issues or birth defects. In fact, I graduated with honors as an undergraduate in college and was valedictorian of my master’s program. I am currently the head of my department, am in a committed marriage, and now I’m 31 and want to start a family.

The issue? I smoke pot, too. It helps me when I feel anxious, and it helps me sleep. My husband wants me to stop entirely before we have a family, but I’d prefer to enjoy it from time to time ... especially since I am not even pregnant yet. Maybe I’ll feel differently once I get pregnant, but considering my mother’s experience and how well I’ve turned out, I don’t see the big deal. Any insight?

  • Who wants a smoked out baby? I'm just saying.

  • I don't know the medical effects on smoking pot while pregnant, maybe there isn't an issue. However I know that doing other known harmful things while pregnant doesn't always result in issues with a baby. Maybe her mom just got lucky and she won't.

As someone who's planning on TTC in the near future I don't understand why she'd even consider taking a risk with her future child. I think it's so selfish of mothers. They aren't hurting themselves, they are hurting their child. Their child might not be able to live a normal life because she was selfish and wouldn't give up a substance for 9 months.

  • I didn't realize that graduate programs (or colleges at all) had valedictorians? I thought that was a high school thing?

Oh and ask a fucking doctor.

Dollars to donuts no doctor will say it's safe.  Just like they won't say it's safe to have a drink.
  • She sounds like some of the speshuls that come on here with horrible ideas wanting validation instead of real advice. Except with pot and a baby instead of wedding etiquette.

No responsible person would even ask this question.  Disgusting and selfish.  (I live in Colorado where it is legal.)

  • Did Prudy get her MD recently or something? What did she answer on this one?

  • I feel like there's two separate issues here.  It seems like her husband is expecting her to never smoke pot again, not just abstaining during pregnancy.  So I'd think that the issue of her husband wanting her to give up this particular substance use for good once she becomes (or is trying to become) a mother is a more relational issue and a better question for Prudie.  But during pregnancy and breastfeeding, she should talk to her doctor.
