This is gross, right?

Sorry if it's huge...

My mom shared this on FB. So far only one person has liked it, which means I'm probably not the only one side eyeing this. I commented on it. I mean, her family was on food stamps when she was a kid when her dad got laid off and her mom was diagnosed with MS, so whyyyyyyyy?

Facebook has gotten really bad for my blood pressure lately.

  • I don't think Kermit would be ok with that.
  • My mom is bad too. She shares controversial thing on FB with no explanation because she wants to "start a discussion" or "hear people's thoughts". What she doesn't realize is that by sharing them it looks like she supports them. I have tried to talk to her about it but she just doesn't understand the point of FB.
  • Memes like that irk me, and I've gone as far as to block people the first time they posted them. I worked five jobs at one point and was *still* eligible for food stamps and Medicaid.

H's aunt is the worst. All day, all hours, non stop. Luckily when I post inaccuracies she deletes them:the stories about gun save lives...when in fact they didn't, states that do drug testing for welfare recipients that actually lose WAY more money because majority of people on welfare aren't addicts and testing is expensive, not understanding the republican/democrat name switch so saying democrats wanted slavery which leads to the newest one...

    Harriet Tubman voted republican.

    I can't.

  • We're about to have a referendum on whether the UK should stay in the European Union. My fb is unbearable right now. Fucking imbeciles suddenly *know* what would happen if we left vs if we stayed. I actually like when people have political opinions or solicit political debate, but when people just share ignorant statements presented as 'fact'? Nope.

  • I'd rather enable 50 scammers than turn away 5 needy families.

I've tried to explain that to people but so many people are stuck on "fuck you got mine". Especially formerly/recently poor people.

I have a friend who is a social worker who talks about how she wishes she could stop working for all the free stuff poor people get, like healthcare and food stamps (and judgement). She, of all people, should understand how minimal and terrible those options are and that most people in those situations would much rather work and get paid and pay for those things.

  • I mean, I get not liking that people buy what is essentially junk with their benefits sometimes. I don't agree with it, but I can understand taking issue with it to an extent. If that was all it was, I'd have rolled my eyes and moved on. It was the insinuation that if you do that, you must be lazy and refuse to work  (and in Texas at least, you can't do that anyway) that got me so steamed. This is why so many people who qualify don't apply, because they're afraid they'll get screamed at if they ever dare buy something that might be just for them once in awhile.

It's an election year, so I've already unfollowed the people who post things like that on my feed.  Tough to do when it's your mom though :s

I think this is important, and very true... I read this article a while back about how a lot of people judge people on welfare/food stamps for having "nice things," but having nice things does not always mean you're abusing the system. I can't find the exact article, but it's similar to this one: http://www.babble.com/babble-voices/yes-im-on-food-stamps-and-no-you-shouldnt-judge-me-for-it/

I judge all people drinking energy drinks equally. They taste gross and can't be healthy...I read that some where I'm pretty sure. Buy pop, it has plenty of caffeine and tastes waaaaaay better.  >:)

Don't mind at all. I'm all in, baby!

I think we are too much of a small fish in a big pond for it to make sense for us to isolate ourselves further, I think we are stronger as part of a larger body with real clout. So much of this debate centres on immigration, but honestly I don't know what we would do without it. We have an aging population that are enjoying 20yrs+ worth of retirement, so we need immigration to fill those jobs and pay taxes. The vast majority of people coming to this country do so to earn. The daily mail just want to focus on the tiny proportion that do not and it drives me nuts. Also, I fucking hate the immigration argument, because I know damn well that the people making that argument are not bothered about french/irish/spanish/polish people, it's the people with a darker shade of skin that tend to really boil their blood.

I also think leaving the EU would have the potential to break up the UK, as if Scotland voted to remain but had to leave due to the overall result, I have no doubt there would be another referendum for scottish independence. And I just don't think my nerves could handle another one of those.

Sorry for the essay, hard to sum up feelings on such an emotive subject in a few sentences! What about you?

I judge people buying soda waaaaaay more. Unless you have a bottle of liquor with it, then I understand.

Completely agree. I'm really afraid about us being left adrift and alone, I worry about trading with other countries, currency, human rights, etc. We are not strong enough as a nation to be apart.

  • To be quite honest, I like the meme.
I work in social work and find that most people are, in fact, just lazy. There are persons that do benefit from assistance and I think that's amazing.
There are requirements in my state that, at least for food stamps, you have to go to classes that teach job skills and interview skills. I've seen other states where people have to volunteer x amount of hours to receive benefits. I think this is good too.
But unless you have a legitimate physical or psychological impairment, stop using your benefits on stupid things. Be happy you even get them.

I will probably get a lot of hate from this. I just get so tired of seeing the majority of people abuse the system without being asked to ever lift a finger while I work my ass off and STILL can't afford what they can afford.

SNAP is actually the most audited and least abused "welfare program" that exists. Long term recipients are overwhelmingly elderly, working families or disabled, and the remainder average 8-10 months on assistance. Also, as a social worker, you should know or at least realize, that the reason it is so hard for so many to leave public aid isn't because they're lazy, it's because the system literally punishes you for doing better. There isn't a step system that allows you to improve your personal financial situation while weaning off of aid.  There's little flexibility and in most areas a hard drawn line and you either receive all or nothing depending on which side of the line you are on.

As the daughter of a disabled lifetime welfare recipient, sister of a social worker, and general human being at large who believes in compassion, your opinion reeks of judgement, which quite frankly, should disqualify you from your job.

Back to to the original intent of the post:  my pension and Medicare receiving asthma/COPD limited uncle posted something one time about removing everyone from assistance regardless of reason. I responded and said you do realize you are talking about your own sister, right?

I read an interesting statistic the other day that an overwhelming number of Americans have directly received government assistance in one way or another. So if you think you're above food stamp recipients, guess again. Someone else somewhere in this nation worked their ass off for your rent controlled apartment, Pell Grant, (ET finish) Earned Income Tax Credit or Medicare.
i do agree the system needs to do a better job at helping people improve their situation. However, for the majority of people I work with , they would make better money getting a part time job and are fully capable of it.
Im all for people receiving assistance who truely need it. My point was, In my line of work and the people I personally work with, yes they are lazy. Yes they are capable. And I have a hard time understanding why they choose to not do anything and make hardly any money when they could prosper In a Job and be better off.
I was not talking about Snap so much as things like SSI.  I think food stamps can be a good support. But SSI gives a person their ONLY income on top of food stamps. I think food stamps can supplement an income.
Also, I believe things like TANF are good as well. I'm talking primarily to single persons without children.

And I do not feel I am above government financial assistance. I was in the position before receiving unemployment and food stamps. Now I have a better job and still struggle with my bills and groceries.
in the mean time, my clients are buying steak dinners, blowing their money on vacations to Florida, and having their rent paid by the government.

It doesn't make sense to me and I feel the system is broken.
  • In Texas, if you want to receive benefits for more than 3 months, you have to work 20 hours a week or be in a job training program, and you get more aid if you work instead of do the program. Which is dumb, training would lead to better jobs. I know 20 hours doesn't sound like enough, but when I worked in a warehouse, a lot of my coworkers had to carefully balance their hours, because if they worked too many, they would lose benefits and wouldn't be able to afford bills or food. It's a system that does punish you for doing better, for trying, because if your minimum wage job takes you anywhere close to making a poverty wage, sorry you make too much money, deal on your own. We yank help away the second people start earning 83% of a poverty wage (wtf, how do we expect people to live on that) and then demonize them if they struggle to get off. It's a broken system, alright. But not in the way you think.

It does hurt me to see those who try get punished for trying. I think the system should REWARD those who work and are able to work. Then after they make enough money, the system should cut them off Instead of cutting them off before they can afford bills.
your state seems to do more than mine. Mine you lose a dollar for every two dollars you earn. With that, it's hard to get off welfare if you're going to make more doing nothing.
  • Can we stop calling them "food stamps"? People haven't been given actual stamps since the 1900s and it was phased out, in part, (in part because electronic payments are far easier) so as not to shame people that need assistance to feed their families.
