Invitation Envelopes - calligraphy/printing

Hi!
I'm getting ready to order my invitations - I'm hiring a calligrapher to address the outer and inner envelopes.  Should I have the calligrapher also calligraphy my return address on the outer envelope and response card envelope - or is it acceptable to have the return addresses printed by the stationer?  I've searched Crane's Blue Book and Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette book without success in getting this question answered.  Any insight is appreciated!  Thank you!

Re: Invitation Envelopes - calligraphy/printing

  • Yes it is acceptable to have your return address printed on the envelope. The thinking is that the return address is the same for all, but the recipient's address is personal on each envelope.
  • Thanks for your response ILoveBeachMusic!    - if I have the return address printed, won't the calligrapher have to try and match the font/print style or it's ok if they don't match?
  • I don't think they'd need to match and from the post office's perspective, it's probably better if they don't. The return address would be smaller and a calligraphy font may be harder to for the automated readers to decipher. If you want to be sure to receive any that are undeliverable for some reason, you'll want the return address to be easily read.
  • No, they don't have to match. For DDs invitations, our return address was on the back flap of the envelope. We just made sure the inks matched. A family friend offered to do the calligraphy so she just bought navy ink to match the printing.

They are going to end up in the garbage.  Every single one of them.  People will look at the envelope for 10 seconds to see what it is, maybe if they are observant they'll think "Oh, this is very pretty," and then they'll rip it open for the invitation and then in the garbage it goes.  Do whatever is easiest and fits your budget.
