  Give them a color or palette and tell them to choose a dress they love. You can dictate length too. For instance, my daughter told her girls short, navy dress. It looked great and every girl picked a dress within her own budget, that she liked on her body.(One girl even wore a dress she had worn in a mutual friend's wedding).

  As someone who has been OOT for the last three weddings I've been in (within a one year time frame), thank you for thinking of how to make it easier on them. David's quick ship colors can be ordered online and come in quickly, so no need to go to a store unless you need measurements, and even then their sizes are listed online. 
  
  But as @ILoveBeachMusic said the easiest would be to give them a color and any other parameters (length, fabric, straps) and let them pick something they like in their price range. Choosing a designer can be more difficult (unless it's a major chain/carried in a lot of stores) because they are going to vary substantially by region.
