Food while getting ready

I am getting ready at the W downtown in NYC- but the cost for catering while we get ready is INSANE.  I was thinking of ordering from somewhere but no clue. Anyone have any suggestions? Just like a bagel platter or two and a lunch platter or two.

Re: Food while getting ready

  • I can't give you local suggestions, but we just ordered a few pizzas for everyone.  We ate before we got dressed.

I don't have any local suggestions either, but I ordered sandwich trays from Publix and got a couple of veggie/fruit trays for everyone and it was under $75 total.

We had cold cuts and buns. Could you buy something like that from the grocery store snd bring it in?
  • I'm always a fan of deli trays.  Either pre-made sandwiches cut into pieces or a make your own.   It gives you a balance of proteins, carbs and some veggies (although not often much).

Which is something I would need.   45 mins after a bagel I hit a sugar low.   I'm one who needs some sort of protein to counter balance too many carbs.

The where from?   Umm, not sure the area of NYC it's located, but there is no shortage of options in NYC.  I would start looking at Yelp.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I agree, sandwiches and/or salads are a good idea. We did that for DD's wedding. For breakfast, while the girls were getting dress, we did yogurt, granola and fruit.
  • Definitely things people can snack on. We got ready at my mum's place, so we got fruit platters, mini croissants and things to put on them like cream cheese, pb, nutella, smoked salmon, etc.

Think finger foods because you're busy with other things and your girls, plus who ever else is there, will want to eat between photos and getting ready.
  • Just download the seamless app and place an order an hour-ish before you want food. Literally any food you want can be delivered.
  • Grocery store deli platters for the win :) Trader Joe's and Mariano's and Jewel all have them (not sure what's convenient to you).

I'm planning on buying sandwich trays and pastas and munchies but our hotel provides a hot/cold breakfast too.
edit - sorry, mine's in NY too and I'm just ordering these from a grocery store.  I'm not familiar with the area, but I think most do it?

  • Also not at all local to NYC, but for my wedding I ordered Jimmy John's (quick delivery sandwich chain that is relatively healthy) for me and my bridesmaids for lunch. Something simple and filling would be ideal, I'd stay away from anything fried or greasy right before getting in my dress, but that's a personal thing.

I think this is owned by grubhub (most places look the same) but yes - definitely the easiest thing to.  I think some places around me even have a 'catering' or 'family size' section for bulk orders, depending on the location of course.

  • Hi there - I also wanted to throw support behind the sandwich idea, but just be mindful if you have any pregnant friends getting ready that they probably won't be down with cold cuts, hot dogs, or bacon because the nitrates can be risky for fetuses.

  • You can always call up a Google Map around your hotel and then search food.  Every food place in the area will pop up.  You can go from there.  I'm sure most of those places will deliver right to your room.
  • How many people are getting ready with you? I recommend seamless or deliver.com for downtown NYC, and just let people order what they want.

  • You are in the city of amazing delis and bagel shops. Seriously. No one does bagels and sandwiches like NY. Ask the concierge to recommend a place close by. Order some bagels and some spreads, or a sandwich/deli tray. You can't go wrong.
  • Grab some yogurts, fruits, and water bottles to put over ice into a cooler for the AM. For lunch, sandwiches from a deli (as others have said, there are tons in NY). You could probably call ahead or stop in and order a platter in advance.

  • Deli trays or sandwiches are a great idea in general, but where exactly are you getting ready? The first step is to find out if you are allowed to have outside catering there.  If it's a guestroom you are golden, but if it's some sort of a getting-ready space associated with weddings and events you may be required to use the hotel's catering or none at all.
  • There's a Whole Foods about a 10 min walk from that hotel- I'd recommend just ordering platters ahead of time and having them delivered. Some of them are on the pricey side, but there are some reasonable (and delicious!) deli platters. You can also get big salads, pastries, fruit & veggies.

I've done it tons of times in the city and they've always been delicious and pretty much the same price as everywhere else (unless you go crazy and get the smoked salmon...which is also delicious...dammit now I want a lox bagel)
