SPOILERS: HP and the Cursed Child

Hopefully the title will prevent me from spoiling this for anyone.

So I loved it, but I have to say not a huge fan of the Voldemort has a daughter line.

I also loved McGonagall scolding Harry and Hermoine.

What are your love/hates?

Re: SPOILERS: HP and the Cursed Child

  • I couldn't get past the Voldey has a daughter bc I think he's asexual so I am going with black magic impregnanted bellatrix and voldey doesn't touch anyone. also, how did Draco not know a pregnant bellatrix was hidden in the Malfoy manor?

i felt like Ron's character was not how I'd picture him as an adult. He seemed so... Lame and whipped, for lack of a better word. Idk. His character development was eh to me.

I enjoyed how sweet Scorpius was compared with a young Draco- how did he end up so sweet? I know they refer that to his mom, but it's funny to me.

Snape's brief return warmed my heart and broken it all at the same time.

I completely agree--someone would have known Bellatrix was pregnant in Malfoy manor. If he was so concerned about the tumors around Scorpious's parentage why not say "Hey my kid isn't Voldemort's child but I know who is".

Ron just seems really dumb in the play, and he wasn't the best student at Hogwarts but he wasn't  stupid.

I loved the Snape part in the book. Also the scene in Godricks Hallow where Harry has to stand by and watch his parents was one of the best written.
  • I thought that the plot line was a little weird. The whole, "we have to save Cedric Diggory" thing seemed kinda random. I did enjoy the alternate realities they explored though. And loved the part with Snape!
  • I loved it! I liked how it felt like a random little interlude. It's not causing me to feel differently about the books. And I loved that Herminone has a big powerful job and Ron to mind the home front.
  • I plowed through the script so quickly. I loved the concept overall of going back in time to try to change the future. The alternate realities were great and quell the "what if..." element that you could think about after having read the other books.
When I learned Voldy had a baby I was disgusted. We all know Bellatrix loved him but.... ewwwwww. I, too, was puzzled about when it could have occurred.
I didn't like having so many pages taken up by memories/dreams identical to scenes in the books- I guarantee no one's a new reader here and everyone knows what occurred in the past. The memories/dreams seemed like a waste of time.
A lot of people are seriously criticizing the script- but... it's a script. People say the actual play is amazing. A lot of scripts suck. And it wasn't even written by J.K. herself. We can't have too high of expectations here. Suffice to say, I had a solid 2 hours of high entertainment. Woo!

  • I read it too fast as well and need to reread, but overall I liked it. I think it was bound to feel somewhat forced or not fleshed out because it's a script, not a book where you can really expound at length on characters' thoughts and actions. I do agree Ron was a little loopy. I think the characterization of Movie Ron affected JKR's writing of this later version of Book Ron. (If you have no idea what I'm talking about, basically the theory or opinion there is that many or even most of Ron's non-comedic lines and contributions in the book were given to Hermione in the movies so Movie Ron turned into this sort of comic relief, dumdum, token best friend playing a bit part behind Harry & Hermione. Which really sucks because Book Ron is awesome!)

My favorite parts were all of Godric's Hollow, especially the part with Hagrid (and Godric's Hollow is one of my favorite places in the entire series; I loved the scenes in Deathly Hallows that were set there, too), and the parallel universe where Harry died during the Battle of Hogwarts and Voldemort rose to power. Not because that's what I wanted but because it was so fascinating to see how things were different, Umbridge as Headmistress, and "For Voldemort and Valor!"

Overall, it was good! On par with the other non-canon material like Beedle the Bard, Fantastic Beasts, etc.

"Difference between Book Ron and Movie Ron summed up in one sentence"

    (More comments here: https://www.reddit.com/r/harrypotter/comments/4knagu/difference_between_book_ron_and_movie_ron_summed/)

    Book

“That is the second time you have spoken out of turn, Miss Granger,” said Snape coolly. “Five more points from Gryffindor for being an insufferable know-it-all.”

Hermione went very red, put down her hand, and stared at the floor with her eyes full of tears. It was a mark of how much the class loathed Snape that they were all glaring at him, because every one of them had called Hermione a know-it-all at least once, and Ron, who told Hermione she was a know-it-all at least twice a week, said loudly, “You asked us a question and she knows the answer! Why ask if you don’t want to be told?”

and now the same scene in the movie

Professor Snape: That is the second time you have spoken out of turn, Miss Granger. Tell me, are you incapable of restraining yourself, or do you take pride in being an insufferable know-it-all?

Ron: He's got a point, you know.

Yes, this exactly! I loved it, I didn't expect an 8th novel and so really appreciated what it was.

And I totally agree about Book Ron v. Movie Ron and the play definitely felt like all Movie Ron.
