Oh no he didn't - an Olympic proposal

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-37079909

In addition to hating public proposals, this guy interrupted a moment she worked her ass off for, and now BBC wins the award for most sexist coverage of the "love story."

Chinese diver He Zi had just received a silver medal for the women's three-metre springboard at the Rio Olympics on Sunday.

But she ended up with an even bigger prize when her boyfriend Qin Xai, in front of a global TV audience, went down on one knee.

Getting married is exciting and all but a bigger prize than an Olympic medal?  Oh please.

  • That kinda bothered me too. A little cringey but as long as she's cool with it!

I also dislike public proposals, and I think the moment she won her medal was not the time to do it. Let her enjoy her success for the moment.

Otherwise it doesn't bother me. What's all the success in the world without someone to share it with.

Agreed. Upstaging the person you love during the biggest moment in her life so far? Not cool.
  • Public proposals make me cringe. Don't put someone on the spot and force their hand. Not the way to start a healthy marriage. When two people decide to get married it should be a private discussion and a mutual agreement.

  • I'm so glad that my FI knew not to do a public proposal. I cringe every time I see one.
  • I'm so glad I'm not the only one that felt this way! Do it after she gets down from the podium, or in the athlete village, or on the beach, or anywhere that isn't her getting a freaking Olympic medal! She worked hard for that.
  • I saw coverage in which they showed the dude on one knee, but didn't show her saying yes- just walking away from the pool ahead of him. Like, if you just got happily engaged, maybe you'd walk away together?

P.S. I saw a public proposal this weekend! We were at a park and a group of about 15 was right by us. They got up to take group photos and a guy proposed. It was cute.

  • There have been a lot of proposals at the olympics this year. I don't remember there being so many in other years, but maybe I wasn't paying attention.
  • That line has since changed from "But she ended up with an even better prize" to "But she ended up with another prize."

I am glad BBC fixed this, but it appears the writers and editors could benefit from the Guardian's piece, How to talk about female Olympians without being a regressive creep - a handy guide by Lindy West.
    I LOVE Lindy West.
