  Colorado is a HUGE state.  Estes Park is the big tourist area with fantastic mountain views of the Rocky Mountain National Park, but October is late season, and there will be snow, probably a LOT of it!  https://www.nps.gov/romo/index.htm  There is no lodging within the park.

  Are you planning to ski?  There are many ski lodges in Vail and Aspen.  Steamboat Springs would also be a possibility if skiing is your thing.
  
  I live on the Western Slope, which looks more like Utah than most people's idea of Colorado.  If you want a change, check out Glenwood Springs (amazing hot springs and canyons) or Gateway Canyons Resort near the Utah border.  http://www.gatewaycanyons.com/  Not too far for a day trip to Moab, Utah to see Arches National Park.  https://www.nps.gov/arch/index.htm

  I haven't done a road trip but Denver is great. I would set aside some time in Denver to really check it out. Likely, you can catch a football game if you are interested in that sort of thing.

  October is considered shoulder season. Depends on the weather, but you can find it's too cold for summery stuff, too early for winter stuff.     Slopes do not open until around Thanksgiving. 
  
  I agree with CMG that Glenwood Springs is worth checking out. If you want to go off the beaten path check out Redstone, Crested Butte, Leadville.  There are a few passes that might still be open during that time.  Independence Pass  is one that is cool. Cute little towns, hiking areas (all of which this year I was able to hike well into Nov.)   Although some years it will be closed already.  This year it didn't close until well into Nov.  Other years, first of Oct.  Just depends on Mother Nature.

  What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

  I've been to CO a few times. Crested Butte is my favorite town. It's beautiful and has several delicious local restaurants. It's easy to find places to stay with mountain views there. We've also stayed in Salida and Winter Park. If you stay in Salida you can easily get to Cottonwood Pass, which is a beautiful area. Winter Park is pretty close to Rocky Mountain National Park (about an hour-ish drive, if I remember right), which is breathtakingly beautiful.
