Anniversary party- Please don't make me actually read this site

My mom and dad are having a big party for their 50th.  ~100 people casual setting.  My mom has asked for ideas for centerpieces and I'd like to consider a unique guest book.

Anything exciting out there you've seen or done?  I really don't want to have to actually look at this site.  Colors are yellow and she doesn't want pictures.

  • I hate to ask this question, but did they have a "theme" to their wedding? Nautical, beach, vineyard, etc. Or was the wedding and/or reception held somewhere special? For example, if it was held in a museum, perhaps there is a photo of the museum you could have framed and then have the guests all sign the mat around the photo? Or if it was held in a neat building with a lot of history, or a special town - perhaps there is a coffee table book about the venue/town that you could have guests sign?

They got married at the Catholic Church and went back to my mom's house for beer and ham sandwiches.

I am trying to convince my mom to do something with photos (she doesn't want it to look like what people have at a funeral) and she might be willing to do a shutterfly book.  I kind of like the idea of having guests sign that.

She nixed the photographer in Paris, but I think my siblings and I are going to do a photo booth that night. They and another couple used to ride around "elephant hunting" in a yellow mustang convertible. We're also trying to find a convertible to stuff with elephants.
  • For a unique guest book, how about a framed "Then and Now" photo, with a photo from their wedding and one more recent (if possible), and then have guests sign the photo mat?

I don't think my mom would want to hang a picture of themselves, but I wonder if I could get an old picture of the church they were married in
  • I like the idea of a Shutterfly book as a guestbook.  Could the centerpieces be a photo of them at their wedding day and a recent pic?  Something like this:

As a wedding DD and SIL received a pen and ink drawing of the church where they were married. Could you maybe find someone who could do this?

  • Are they still going to Paris? Did you decide to do the pictures?

They are, but my mom doesn't want to spend a day taking pictures.  Party is in August, but the trip isn't until November.

For August, I think sunflowers or mums would make lovely centerpieces. Unless you're trying to steer away from flowers, they'd be my go-to because they're easy to get rid of afterward and you can borrow vases or get them at the dollar store.

  • Keep it simple...  What we did for my parent's 50th was order a box of flowers from Sam's Club Flowers for the centerpieces and put them into vases with gold rock things in the bottom of the vase.  It was pretty and didn't cost a ton.  Then we gave the flowers to people in attendance at the end so nothing left over to figure out what to do with or store.

    That is so cute!!!!!!
  • If you have the budget for it, you could find one of those high-end bakeries to turn the convertible of elephants into a cake.
At my grandparents' 50th, we had a photographer take a family portrait with them, their kids, and grandkids.  It was a smaller party though, with basically only those people in attendance; but if they'd be open to that, I'm sure you could make an announcement at the party to have immediate family come to x place at y time to do a portrait.
