I thought this article was interesting and eye opening. Although the percentage of traffic fatalities has dropped over recent years, pedestrian fatalities has increased sharply. 50% of pedestrian fatalities are alcohol related. 15% where drivers are above the legal limit and 35% where pedestrians are over the legal limit. 82% of pedestrian fatalities occur outside of an intersection.
I have the link to the article below. It was printed by my local paper, so there is a good bit of info on this subject about Louisiana specifically, but there is also a lot of national data. And general ideas about why pedestrian deaths have been increasing. Things like more people walking nowadays and both drivers and pedestrians being distracted by smart phones.
